You`re paid in arrears, so you won`t see anything til next Monday.

I`m heading in to sign up for this tomorrow....still being paid till tomorrow but I have been told that you really need to do it whenever you don`t have a job as it can have tax implications if not when you retire and want your state pension (ie: they`ll want the tax on the money you should have claimed or something (could be bollocks, I don`t know!)).

I hate `signing on` in any way. Makes me feel like....well, like someone who hasn`t worked every available day since leaving college (as I have), especially with some of the, obviously really actively looking for work, scummers that tend to hang around in the Job Centres! (Go on, tell me off for that one, I dare you ;-)).

Good luck with your search anyway fella - hope it goes as well as I hope mine`s going to go!

It used to be, and may still be, that you don`t get paid anything for the first three days of a `new` claim! No idea why. Also, when you`re paid may depend on your `cycle`...no not the bi type! I think that as the allowance is paid fortnightly (or was?) and say your signing day was a Monday it could be over two weeks before you got anything - thats because if you made your claim on a Tuesday you may have just missed your payment day and need to wait nearly two weeks for the next one. Though now my head really hurts and I am open to being shot down and corrected! :/ :/

I`ll get me coat...

I think you`re right, Exile. As you say, I`m sure it used to be like that anyway.

Luckily (and I really mean this) I have got enough in my second, and last, paycheque for two months of my half of the mortgage/bills/food payments and so, even if it takes me `till the end of next week (and it might due to the bank holiday) to find another job, it won`t be curtains for me & Caz if I haven`t been paid the usual. As I say, Lucky.

It`s vital to sign on as your weekly National Insurance contribution, normally deducted by employers when you work, is paid for you whilst you get benefit or, indeed, if you don`t qualify for benefit.

Not doing so means that (a) you`ll get a bill from the Tax Office saying you`ve not paid National Insurance for the whole year (it is optional whether you pay it or not (b) when you qualify for state retirement pension, any gaps in your National Insurance record will mean that your pension could be reduced. Mind you, by the time us lot reach 65, there probably won`t be a state retirement pension left anyway :(

This is most true. I`m a contractor and am often out of work for longish periods, but I never sign on. I used to in my younger days, but the whole process is so degrading, and the people at the dole office so snooty, I refuse to do it any more. They look at you like you`re a work-shy piece of filth, although they changed their tune somewhat when I pointed out that my earning potential is slightly better than some desk-bound paper-pusher in a crappy dole office. Of course, they also told me that I wan`t entitled to any benefit because of of my savings anyway, making the whole process rather redundant.

Anyway, I recently got a letter telling me that I owe the IR money for unpaid NI contributions, which is bulls***. They owe me far more in rebates (I pay a shed load of tax when I earn), but they wanted so much bloody information I gave up. I got some out of them once, but it was so much hassle that I can`t be bothered to go through the process again. Anyway, as Clayts said, the chances of their being a state pension in 35-40 years time when I`m of age are slim to none.

Lie about your savings they don`t know what you have in the bank.

I hate job centres so depressing but new deal is worse it`s so degrading i had to go to a building with about 10 others for about 6 hours to show them i could read and write.
it was really stuff like the cat sat on the mat and what is 2x7.it is compulsery-please scrap new deal.
