Yeah, i read that. Shame, as they probably had the most fleshed out backstory of any baddie. And if they had thrown a bit of money at them they would have been awsome.

I would have loved to see how the CGI team got Daleks to climb stairs! :D

The Nation Estate have done themselves (and the country) no favours.

Best left in the past imho, after all they can`t go upstairs, they aren`t exactly as menacing as they used to be...

...and wtf is it with that plunger anyway?

They were shown to be more than capable at climbing stairs in "Rememberance of the Daleks"

The design may have been over 40 years old but not beyond a re-imagining by some 3D modellers, something like this would have slotted in quite nicely to the new series.

I think the main sticking point was that while Terry Nation was alive, he wouldnt let any Dalek tale exclude Davros & they became bit players in their own stories as a result.

My guess is the family wanted him back again as well.

My guess is they could smell money. It`s their loss. Personally I`d rather see Eggy`s best mate than the Daleks if they could only come back on Edgar Rice Burroughs terms.

What exactly do the Nation Estate plan to do with the rights to the Daleks, anyway? It`s not as if the current Dalek merchandise (purchased mainly by long-standing Doctor Who fans) is making them a forune. Perhaps these loonies really don`t want to make a load of money from the new series being a massive hit, spawning myriad opporunities to cash-in?

Who in their right mind would really want their `intellectual property` to become the `must-have` toy of Christmas 2005, anyway?

Could it all just be a huge publicity stunt?

I mean, without Dr Who the Daleks are redundant, so what is the point of not letting them be in the new show? it makes no sense ..yeah they are saleable as an icon of sci fi from a merchandise point of view, but surely worth WAY more if they are in the new series? I don`t really know the whole story but from what I know the Nation family estate don`t want the BBC cashing in on the Daleks because of some years old disagreement right? but surely the whole sorry mess we have here is just giving the next series and the BBC loads of free publicity for the soon to be shown episodes and making the Nation family just look like a bunch of penny pinching spoilsports and very childish...no?

I cant see what the Nation family think they are gonna achieve from all this..maybe they think they can hold the BBC to ransom? that Dr Who isnt Dr Who without them and they think the BBC will back down and give em loads of cash...

It depends how the Daleks were going to be represented by the BBC. We all know that the BBC has been taking an unfair p*** out of Dr Who and it legions of fans, and it could be that the Estate of Terry Nation didn`t like the idea of what the BBC had plans for the Daleks, that they decided against them.

For all we know it could be a p*** take of the series, rather than a serious sci fi drama.
