I`ve just asked to be banned from the DVD Forums

Mark Oates (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 8th May 2004, 00:19

I`ve been a regular lurker/ contributor on the DVD Forums about as long as I`ve been on the ones here at DVD Reviewer. They`ve never been as friendly as these forums, and they`ve been pretty interesting in the past. They`re very strict about swearing, and their moderators are unforgiving at best.

But tonight I was browsing a bit, and I came across a couple of threads Rik has posted, and one about Movietyme on their suppliers thread that left me flabbergasted at their sheer unfriendliness. One was Rik touting for the Help Fight Cancer project, and I got the impression the Forum regulars looked on it as a waste of time; similarly his "Bad News" thread got pretty short shrift. He`d ported some of the thread over from here, and all he got was a strip torn off him by one of the moderators for language that contravened their T&Cs. The forums have also barred anyone from mentioning Movietyme - even debating mentioning Movietyme.

It left a really bad taste in my mouth and as a result I`ve asked to be banned from their forums to avoid repeating the experience. If I can`t log on to the Forums, I won`t get drawn back in (and I`ve erased DVDTimes from my favourites as well).

It`s a crying shame when a great site goes bad.

Pricks.

Don`t need to `ask` for a ban - just don`t go there anymore.. we`ll be watching..... well maybe...

I`ve never liked the DVD Forums. I paid a couple of visits there when I got into DVD back in `99, and perhaps a couple more since, and each time I have been stunned by the snotty, elitist attitude that seems to prevail. I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about their unfriendliness, and while I don't see eye to eye with Reviewer's moderators all the time they look like liberal hippies compared to the mods over there ;) You only have to look at their lengthy T&C page to see that their sense of self-importance is too great, not to mention comments like this:

"DarkAvenger - if you have a problem mail me directly, otherwise I don`t expect to see another post like that on the site. Understood?"

I`ve never been on the site before.

Don`t think I will judging by your comments - it`s fine here!

Chris - that comment you quoted was one of the last straws for me.

Ste - I`m weak, I pop on to DVDTimes and then the Forums as a matter of routine on my daily jog through cyberspace. I`ve nuked my favourites link to DVDTimes to avoid the place in future, and I asked to be taken off their user database so that I couldn`t weaken and wind up in there again ;)

Whats their problem with discussing movietyme? Does it fall into the `Movietyme have got their own forum for this, dont take up our bandwidth with it?`

and it always makes me laugh when moderators get up their own arses. Its the ultimate `My word is Law` scenario, where if anyone messes with you, their comments are altered or removed. Its no surprise they go power mad. Because at the end of the day, they actually hold power over something. It may be a small DVD forum tucked away on the arse end of the internet. But it validates their existance and makes them feel `big`.

In my experience very few moderators stray away from forums they moderate. And when they do they complain endlessly about the other mods...........

Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent.
Forty percent of all people know that.

I`m sure we`d all be the first to admit we are far from perfect!

Although perfection is imho rather boring. It means there is nowhere else for you to go, no way to improve, only way to go is down. :)

We should all go register and see how many posts we can enter with swear words before we get banned! :D
