Buying for buying sakes??

UNBREAKABLE (Competent) posted this on Wednesday, 7th March 2001, 00:12

lt seems from what l read, a lot of people are buying dvds simply for the sake of it. l must confess l did for a long time as well.

When l first got my dvd player, l bought a lot of films straight away, mostly R1`s which were still playing in cinema. Then l replaced my videos with dvds.

Now l look at my collection of dvds and wonder if l was too quick buying disks. l mean l have a lot of films which are good, but l dont think they have lasting appeal, e.g Enemy of the State, Long Kiss Goodnight, films l probably wouldnt buy if l still had video.

Anyone else feel same way? The why-did-l-buy-THIS? disks sitting in your collection??

I think one does get into a kind of feeding frenzy with DVD. It never happened with VHS - although I must admit why-did-I-buy-that? syndrome does apply to some of the ex-rental tapes I used to buy before DVD came along.

I think there`s a lot of that isn`t-it-cool-I`ve-got-my-own-top-quality-copy-while-everybody-else-has-to-rent-the-tape with day and date DVD releases here, and certainly more than a degree of swank when you can come home with friends to watch a movie on tv that "ordinary mortals" have to queue at the cinema for.

I have to say that like VHS, I tend to buy movies that don`t have an awful lot of lasting appeal, but I think that`s a hangover from my 8mm home movie collecting days - I`d rather have my own copy of a movie than rent it.

me? you too? we`re f**ked :D

Totally agree on the two posters view, but I have gotten films which I don`t think too much of for little more than a DVD rental, therefore I don`t really look at the shelf and go "oh. What have I done? I`ve created a monster of crap films and discs, how am I suppose to get rid of them?". Have to admit I`ve got rid of a few discs recently, but in truth, not a lot, and even if I`ve traded in some, I`m gonna get them back again, but some time in the future.

That happened for my purchase of CTHD, Snatch and Way of the Gun, but I`m gonna make sure I watch them from time to time.
I never had the money for he VHS and LD collecting faze, but as I do now, i`m collecting all the films I`d enjoy (and some for the ovelty :) ) , and actually revisiting films from the past (on VHS i`d always opt for new films, now I`m willing to watch old films.

I`ll end it here before it get`s out of hand, but I do buy for buyings sake, but in a good way. When the studios release films that fit my critera, I`ll get it.

I think it`s the attraction that people have for shiny metal things. I tend to get addicted to TV shows as well. Watch a series for a couple of weeks and then feel that I`m sentenced to watch the next 18 episodes without fail. Even started avoiding watching things I think I might like such as Spaced as I`ll then be doomed to watch every single episode and buy the dvd of the first series.

now that`s just silly - spaced is fantastic!

I made a rule really early on in my DVD buying - only to buy movies I`ve seen and movies I know I could watch many more times. Hence despite my love of sci-fi movies there aren`t that many there, ditto horror movies. There may be lots of fun ones but I`m only buying the ones that have lots of depth of story or great direction and stuff.

isn`t stuff a useful word :)

Deep man..but totally agree with ya.

I`ve bought those that are brill on sound and special effects/explosions that will come across spectacular like on a DD5.1 / 7.1 system. I do get films I`ve seen and like (Heat, Gladiator) and those with excellent reviews (Private Ryan, erm...) which is why I wont buy Die Hard 3 even though I love the film..they`ve, allegedly screwed up on the editing to DVD...why oh why?

Toshiba Rocks!! (how an originally quaint phrase)

I think we`re all becoming victims of the ad-machines.

`oooh, 2 disk version/limited edition/comes in metal box/does the washing up....`

AAAARRRGGGHHHHHHHHHH!

I`ve always been selective in the DVDs I buy - there just isn`t the time to re-view loads of 2nd rate films in whatever format we collect them. I`ve only just become aware of Criterion editions - is this just Elitism gone mad or another sodding Porsch for the advertising execs.....

OK here`s the deal.

Originally TV and NICAM VCR. Nowt else.

Then found crappy old `music centre` (remember them) that my landlord had junked in the attic. Wired it up to VCR. Hmm - 2 channel sound. Cool

Right, jump on the Sky bandwagon - excellent deal from Granada (free for three months, free STB, the works). Hmm - yeah, I like it.

Buy a copy of What Hi Fi - mistake....go to Richer Sounds. Spend £250 on a ProLogic amp and speakers. Blimey - how fab is this - surround sound - gorblimey.

Pretty hunky dory for a while. Hmm - DVD, eh ?

Magazine comes out in April 2000 with a bargain DVD player in it - you know readers` special....£175....Nice....

Now, how about that subwoofer then....yeah, oh baby that`s good....

Dolby ProLogic ? Hmm - passe, methinks.

£280 on a Dolby Digital/DTS Amp.. Done deal....

Absolute heaven.

Of course I buy discs for the hell of it - I`m a damned junkie, is all. But in the space of four years I`ve gone from analogue nightmare to digital dreamland - dontcha just love progress.

Right then where can I get a turbo-nutter 7.1 channel THX amplifier from....

The Criterion stuff is a joy! If you`re seriously collecting then getting what is usually the ultimate edition of the film is very very satisfying. eg. uncut Robocop, fully restored and detailed Brazil

Ditto the japanese Scream... worth it if you`re really bothered about this stuff which i am!
