Has T3 just bombed at the U.S box-office?

Jason Bagnall (Competent) posted this on Thursday, 3rd July 2003, 23:45

It`s grossed 12.4 million on it`s opening day, bringing its total to 16.5 inc. advanced previews that were screened on Tuesday. How much did MIB2 bring in at the same time last year? I know it opened on July 2. These figures just seem horrid to me, for a movie that cost 180 million to make. I don`t think anybody cares about Terminator anymore, and we can kiss a T4 goodbye. Shame, from the buzz, T3 is a pretty damn good movie.

If even Waterworld can turn a profit after years of video sales, maybe T3 will be okay after all. Was it up against anything else this year?

the box office doesnt mean anything. i check out whats done what, and how much something has made, and am interested in the whole box office thing, but it has nothing to do with how good a film is.
if your favourite film did nothing at the box office would you not like it?
what is failure anyway? the matrix which is pretty average has still made a load of money worldwide.
i would rather a film opened well but had the legs to hang in there. something like lord of the rings, which although hasnt got anywhere near titanic or spiderman was still in the charts many weeks after it first came out, whereas after four weeks the matrix is out of the U.S. top ten.
another thought, with t3 being a 12a will this count against it? they have obviously made this film with the youth market in mind, lets be honest any big budget film that wants to make money aims itself at that market, spiderman, daredevil etc. but will they be alienating themselves from the older audience who know about terminator but who are put off by a dumbed down rating, and the kids who wont know much about the history of teminator.
anyway its the holiday weekend in the states so its not going to do that badly, even if the opening day figures dont compare well with clones, matrix or spiderman.

I don`t think he said he didn`t like it to be fair, he asked if it had bombed at the box office.

Just remember its the 4th July big holiday weekend in Yankland so those figures may be a lot different in a couple of days time. TBH I didn`t even know it had been released - I shall have to open my eyes.
P.S Did someone say something about a female terminator?

T3 opened for previews on Tues/Wed so let`s wait and see what the figures are like next week over 5-days.

Incidentally, MIB2 took about $87.2m over its 5-day opening last year. IMO, MIB2 is a dire sequel.

This is what Screendaily reports today:

T3`s first day gross of $16.5m sends Intermedia shares soaring

Having climbed 19% last week, Intermedia shares had rocketed a further 18% by press time yesterday as opening figures for Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines came in. The film, which grossed $4m on Tuesday night previews, took $12.5m on its first full day on release yesterday through Warner Bros, bringing its first day total to $16.5m.

Intermedia is estimating a five-day gross in the $70m range.

Shares in IM Internationalmedia, Intermedia`s corporate parent, were at Euros 2.09 at end of day LA time, hitting a year high. Significantly, the volume of trading was heavy: more than 1.6m shares were traded yesterday, compared with an average of less than 100,000 shares per day in the first four months of the year.

Terminator 3, budgeted at around $175m, is this weekend up against MGM`s female-skewed Legally Blonde 2: Red, White And Blonde and DreamWorks` family film Sinbad: Legend Of The Seven Seas.

Shares has already climbed last week as good reviews came in and the film went down well at Cinema Expo exhibitor conference in Amsterdam.

Intermedia has raised the stakes on the film by sacrificing upfront fees in return for slice of the back end, a gamble which is increasingly looking like it has paid off. Intermedia and Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar`s production company C-2 Pictures have also retained merchandising rights.

Not in America, because T3 is an R rated film in the US, the same rating as the other two Terminator films.

$12m isn`t spectacular, but it`s not a bomb. Because it is R rated, the numbers are expected to be lower. Only The Matrix Reloaded has overcome the R rating in the past, and as you know the hype on that film was phenomenal. T3 has had nothing but bad word of mouth coming from everywhere for the last year, and about 3 weeks before release (when they started screening the movie) it finally started to get good word of mouth. So the real test for T3 is the second weekend.

Also, T3 is up against Legally Blonde 2, which took over $9m on the same day. I know, I mean, the first film was crap, how did the second one do so well (Legally Blonde that is, not Terminator ;-) )?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, no matter how wrong it is ;-)

Does anyone know the gist of the story without giving too much away?

Is Arnie a good guy/robot or a bad robot, is he even a robot?
Yes, he acts like one!
Term 2 was good as you didn`t know he was good................... until he went to the shops!

12 million is bad, in fact, it`s bulls*** (if it`s a fact) but don`t discard it right away, "Terminator 3" is getting pretty amazing audience turnout response so you might see a climb next week, but ever the cynic, I`m not holding my breath. They still shouldn`t have opened it up against "Legally Blonde" and the new Disney picture, talk about audience marginalisation and commercial suicide. If it`s a disaster, lets hope it puts an end to these ludicrous $150 million + budgets that are destroying American film.
