Harry Potter book 5 thread, earplugs at the ready, there`s gonna be some argueing...
Less than 2 weeks to go, I`m positively moist with anticipation....
(sweaty palms, you perverts...)
slight spoiler...
Ron joins the quidditch team, like I predicted a year ago....
What a new HARRY POTTER book means to me
More annoying news coverage that could be better served by telling the world my backgarden tulips grew an extra inch.
Ok, you people! Sit tight, hold the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we`re not back by dawn... call the president.

RE: What a new HARRY POTTER book means to me
Chacun a son gout, Richard. I`m with Stantz on this one. HP`s a literary phenomenon that`s pretty newsworthy. An author makes over £200 million ripping off LOTR and half a dozen other literary sources. That`s not bad. And before you start saying I`m bad-mouthing the wizardlet, check out my disc reviews - I like the movies and I like the books. I get most fun figuring out where she`s plundered her ideas from. If you draw a few parallels between HP, LOTR and the Star Wars trilogy, I reckon there`s only one way for the story to go in book five and it isn`t pretty.

Mark, I`d say she`s drawn more heavily on the Earthsea books than anything else. I`ll have a read of your reviews sometime, they sound interesting.

Doesn`t sound like anything more newsworthy than Beatrix Potter did years ago (she even half inched the name!). And I don`t see grown men reading the tales of Timmy Tippletoes on the tube.
JMHO folks!

For a more interesting "crossover" read that is ostensibly for children, check out the Philip Pullman "His Dark Materials" trilogy. Superbly written, with lots of interesting and much more original ideas.
....and yes, I will read the new HPO book too.
RE: What a new HARRY POTTER book means to me
I didn`t like Pullman`s ``His Dark Materials`` trilogy that much. It was good, and it did have lots of original ideas but `superbly written` is a bit generous IMHO. I might read them again before the new HP book comes out as I`ve got nothing else to do with my time.

Ever get the impression that the Harry Potter books are "The Sun" of the literary world. Everyone reads it yet the language is aimed at 10 year olds!!! Honestly I`ve never seen the fascination with them though I do appreciate its good to see kids getting into reading and away from the old TeeVee...I just dont really understand why adults feel the need to read books which are obviously aimed at a much younger audience???

I enjoyed the HP books and I`m not ashamed of it! I preferred Pullman`s trilogy myself, it`s more of a children`s story set in a darker adult fantasy universe rather than a children`s story set in a children`s fantasy universe(if that makes any sense).
