Hello,
I`m just trying to watch American Beauty again, and I still can`t see what all the fuss is about.
It`s ok, but to me it`s hardly the classic it`s protrayed as. Kevin Spacey seriously over-acts, the story is hardly unique, in fact it`s quite naive, the jokes are really not that funny, and all have been heard/seen before.
I suppose I`m a bit of a cynic, but is it `good` because Sam Mendes is popular at the moment ?
No doubt the movie buffs here will disagree with me, but does anyone else share my view?

I saw AB a few weeks ago and it was good, very watchable, and a nice change from the pace and structure of most films we see these days.
But I agree that despite the good performances of everyone in it, how it won awards I really don`t know. Somewhat over-rated.
Was there really nothing better that year?

Saw it for the first time last night, and thoroughly enjoyed it (so much so I am updating DVD Profiler with it as a wanted DVD).
Spacey is a great actor, and his performance in AB was just right - completely on the mark.
Annette Bening didn`t get a big part, but for what she had, it was sufficient.
However, the two pouting teenagers (Sorvino and Birch) were annoying, and not that good (although the latter was better when she shut up and took her kit off).
As for the plot, it was more original and breath of fresh air from other Hollywood offerings.
