Page 1 of Things are looking bad for GAME

Not sure if others have been following this, but:

I read in the newspaper today that Capcom have joined EA in withholding games (I think they are given to the stores on a credit basis?). If you are struggling to sell enough products as it is, not having new major products on sale isn`t going to help much. :/

I have a strange affection for Game, I think it`s because I bought a cheap Gamecube and XBox 1 from them when they would be selling them off for £30.

I`ll be sad to see them go tbh. They might not be the cheapest, but they`re by far the most convenient.

I personally think it`ll be bad news for the pre-owned market too. I appreciate there are other stores out there like CEX, but there`s not enough of them out there. My nearest is about 15 miles away, and it`s a real pain in the ass.

Hopefully someone will save them though...

Sad to see ppl lose jobs if/when it comes to that (although US GameStop may step to buy up shops), but I`ve never liked Game. Now and again they have bargains, but generally rip off merchants, terrible part exchange rate etc. Don`t think I`ve ever bought a game new in store, occasionally from their website, and only a handful of v old 2nd hand games as generally 2nd hand prices are similar to new on internet.

CEX, Cash Converters and ebay have always been better for 2nd hand games.

I have been following it, and agree things look grim. No, they aren`t the cheapest, but they are convenient, and for that reason we do use them occasionally. In fact I was in the Ashford branch yesterday, and very nearly wished the girls behind the till good luck with their jobs, but didn`t want to depress them.

If Game does go, would that also include GameStation, because Game bought them out a couple of years back, didn`t they? That would be a double whammy for the High Streets again!

Who are GameStop? Do they have stores over here? I haven`t heard of them.

Buying it for £1 sounds great, until you realise it made an £18m loss so far this last year.

Though I worked out, each store has to make a further £1.1k a month to break even, which maybe doesn`t sound that hard to do?

I suspect if shops like Game want to survive, they need to change the way they do business, simple retail isn`t going to cut it. They need to have very regular events to attract gamers, and have a great big sofa and coffee shop inside.

Went into both stores in Ashford today and they have massive sales on. Asked guy behind Game`s counter if he was worried about his job.

He said they had told him not to worry and as he had been there since he left school he felt he was safe. I didn`t want to rain on his parade, but any company that`s about to close branches or "lose" some employees will always tell their staff not to worry. I`ve been made redundant, so been there, got the t-shirt, etc.

Anyway, if you want to pick up any used games cheap, get in there quick before they close the doors! I am really beginning to wonder if they will survive this.
