Which console should I buy?

droid1978 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 6th November 2003, 14:28

I am a console virgin but do not know which is the best one out of the X Box or PS2. I have ruled out the Gamecube because it is not selling well. (Or wasn` according to media so I thought that Nintendo might be abandon it.)

Any thoughts and advise appreciated?

What do you mean the GameCube`s not selling well? Since its price drop it has increased its market share to some 40% here. If you`re going to buy a console on the basis of selling well I would go for the PS2.

If you`ve really never played a console, try and have a go of a Nintendo 64 on Super Mario 64, or one of the Zeldas on it. On the GameCube I can recommend Mario Kart:Double Dash which looks like being one of the best games out there. My local GameStation had a copy of it to play and it was great!

As for the X-Box, well that`s not selling well at all. Ultimately its down to what you want in a console though. It seems a bit silly to dimiss a console simply because you don`t think it`s selling well.

Try and have a go on the consoles you want to buy - particuarly the "killer apps".
PS2 - Pro Evolution Soccer 3, Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2(there`s more I`m sure)
X-Box - Halo ( I don`t like it but it`s considered to be one of the best FPS out there) - Sorry, I hate the pad of the X-Box so I haven`t really played much more.
GC - Super Mario Sunshine, Zelda:The Wind Waker, Star Wars:Rogue Leader - theres quite a lot more I`m sure.

Horses for courses! Depends on the type of games you play ? The quality of games that you want? How much you are prepared to pay per game?

Xbox - Great graphics, Excellent Machine, Over 400 games now available, Xbox Live. Halo.
PS2 - Very popular machine, Over 700 games available, Cheap games, Pro Evolution Soccer 3.
Gamecube - Cheap machine, Over 300 games available, cheap games. Only format to have Resident Evil series.

Personally I think my Xbox is damn ace and it`s excellent for the type of games I like i.e. sports sims & driving. I would rip off my right plum to get Pro Evo Soccer 3 and Resident Evil on the Xbox but it aint gonna happen, which goes back to the original question, depends on the types of games you enjoy playing.

All the best

Pete

Clearly TinnionA is a Gamecube lover being that he only seems to know anything about that console! lol!

To be honest, it`s really worthless asking that kind of question at times because people are often biased towards certain consles. I own all three, and would probably say go for the Xbox. The graphics are superior to PS2 and there are plenty of top games coming out. It`s an ugly machine, but with a mod-chip becomes so versatile that it`s definitely worth investing in one.

Though the Gamecube has got a few good games coming out in the next few months (and has some top games out already) I`m still sitting on the fence. It`s a nice little machine, but I get the feeling that there`s not so much support from developers when it comes to games, and very often the only exclusive titles come from Nintendo, Sega or Capcom.

PS2 is a tricky one, because I tend to go through phases of playing it. It still is the most popular console, and has a massive back-catalogue of games.

You could always buy a Gamecube, being that they`re so cheap, and buy an Xbox too with a games package. Probably come in at over £200 but at least if you decide you don`t like one you can sell it or return it? At the end of the day, see what you thinks look best and just go for that one, they all have their pro`s and con`s to be honest. Hope that helps!

Just get an xbox, ps2 is an old fogey and should be cheaper than a gamecube and the gamecube is so reasonable you can buy it anytime.

I like driving games generally and also thought the Gamecube had none that were any good.

If you like driving games get an Xbox + Colin Mcrae 4 + Project Gotham 2 and you`ll be as happy as a pig in s***!

True, if you like driving games go for an Xbox.

Nah, I`m a Nintendo Lover. The NES was my first console and it was brilliant. Along with Sega, they have provided some of the best games of all time. My most recent console was actually a Dreamcast, which I still play from time to time. Before that it was an N64 which I am playing most days.

Are not the exclusive Nintendo games reason enough to buy a gamecube?

I think so. But I don`t have any of the next gen consoles yet. I am tempted by Argos` offer of a gamecube with Mario Kart: Double Dash and an extra controller for £100, especially as it has 4 zelda games included with it as well. The fact that I haven`t brought any of the Next-gens tells you what I really think of them.

But really, if you want driving games buy an X-Box. Game has one with 4 games for £140 - the same price as Microsoft`s official bundle. I`ve never played Gran Turismo 3(I did like the first one), but it is considered to be one of the best driving games on the PS2.

You know what? Forget it. You should do a search on google for driving games X-Box and driving games PS2 and then decide based on the search results what appeals to you more. Don`t ask in a games store as they will always say PS2(seeing as that makes them the most profit!).
