Has 3D film making had it's day?

Interesting article over at the Beeb I saw a week ago and forgot to mention...

Quote:
in retrospect, Avatar now seems the high-point of 3D movie-making, with little since 2009 to challenge its achievement. Three years on, has the appeal of 3D gone flat?
Clearly it's not sold Sky boxes the way they thought it might, and apathy towards it has made apathy towards blu-ray from the general DVD buying public look like positive obsession.

Personally I think the industry trying to milk the cow with converted films are partially to blame for the whole thing, and we'll just continue to get the odd great 3D movie every few years and that's it.

It was a fad in the 80`s and, new tech aside, it`s still a fad. It`s a way to sell over-priced TVs and an extra £1.50 a pop at the cinema. 3D glasses dim an already dark screen and for people without 20/20 vision like myself, it`s nigh-on pointless.

The cow has been milked, it`s a novelty in the cinema environment, but I never saw it doing great things for the home market. Of course, since Cameron started all this off again in earnest with Avatar, the next thing will be 48FPS (or equivelant) TV`s to play Jackson`s latest opus.

I think 3D has definitely had its day.  I`m glad I have a 3D TV, and a collection of movies (most of which I haven`t got round to screening in 3D), but I tend not to buy new 3D titles unless somebody has been absolutely raving about them.

I`m unconvinced about 48fps.  I know how ghastly stuff looks when I switch on Trumotion on the telly - like they`re wading through treacle.  I think the future will be in 4K or 8K large-scale displays interacted with at close range rather than viewed traditionally.

I don`t think it ever had its day. I don`t know a single person who`s actually likes 3D. I saw Life of Pi the other day and kept wishing it was in 2D so I could just concentrate on the film, and that`s supposed to be one of the best native 3D films there is.

Am I alone in still never having seen a 3D film?

Tried the TV`s set up in stores to try and tempt my wallet out which just drew a shrug and is that it reaction from me.

When and if 3D is available without glasses and works from any angle I may be interested until then I`ll hold out for a cheap S/H Holo suite when they refit the Enterprise.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary

I am another that has never been to see a 3D movie in cinema. Tried the 3D tvs when in showroom. Demo films shown are filmed to show off Hi-res 3D to its best.

I have a 3d tv but have never watched anything in 3d because it never came with any glasses & the right type for the tv cost £46 per pair. When I was looking for a new tv, M&S were selling off a 46" Tosh smart 3d tv for less than a smaller non-smart telly. (£320). Amazon sell some glasses (not made by Toshiba) that "might" work for around £25, but I`ll live without it. I have a few blu-rays that are 3d, but only because they either came with the 3d as standard, or because a few times the 3d version has been cheaper. I know the ps3 can play 3d but I`ve never bothered to find out how to turn the setting on. I`ve never seen a 3d film at the cinema.

I've not seen one, well a modern one anyway. :)

Not for wanting to though, I really fancied seeing Avatar in 3D at an IMAX, or Toy Story 3, but circumstances (or more like apathy from other people I was trying to get to go with me) stopped it.

The Hobbit in 3D and 48fps might tempt me tho.

I`ve never seen a 3D movie at the cinema, for that matter.  I`ve got a 42" LG 3D set that came with seven pairs of passive specs - passive is much better than active, although you compromise resolution for not getting migraine-inducing flicker.  And the LG Cinema-3D glasses are compatible with theatrical Real-3D.

I have Avatar in 3D and have yet to get round to watching it.  Mind you, I`ve been letting my to-watch pile get out of hand recently.

The last thing I watched in 3D was Jaws 3D when it came out at the cinema.
