Page 1 of So, how many times have you dipped?

I keep telling myself that I`m not going to buy movies again that I already own, but they come out with some better technology, some better way of displaying an image and presenting the sound, and off I go again.

Today, I purchased my fifth version of Blade Runner.

From Pan and Scan, happy ending VHS, to widescreen VHS director`s cut, to director`s cut on DVD, to Final Cut on five disc tin collection on DVD, to Blu-ray Final Cut (with the Dangerous Days Doc on DVD again!") that I bought today.

I think that beats my four versions of Star Wars OT, four versions of STII TWOK, three versions of Total Recall (would be four but I`m not counting review discs).

So how many times have you re-bought your favourite movie?

I`ve had VHS, original DVD, remastered DVD, HD DVD and five disc BD for Blade Runner. I had the original Star Wars trilogy on VHS, widescreen VHS, pikey DVD (that I bought from DVDSilver), DVD and limited edition DVD, and I`ll be getting the BDs. Had about five copies of A Nightmare on Elm Street on various formats as well. There are quite a lot of films I`ve had at least four copies of, including Total Recall, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Alien, Aliens, and even more that I`ve had three copies of.

Oh, I`ve also spent an obscene amount on numerous versions of Park Chan-wook`s films...

I really hope that Blu-ray will be the final time I re-buy anything like Evil Dead 2, but I thought that about DVD.

We try not to double dip unless the extras look "essential", not just to see the film look/sound better, although it was only with the purchase of the blu ray player a few months ago the living room VCR finally got unplugged :(

I think 12 Monkeys is only film we currently have on VHS and Blu Ray.

there`s a few fims we have on VHS and DVD

Evil Dead 1 we have as part of DVD trilogy box set, and book of the dead edition on DVD, and have them all on VHS I assume, maybe just 2 and 3?

Superman 1 & 2 have as Superman 1&2 DVD boxset, and in the super duper ultimate mega edition DVD tin of all the films, don`t think I own them on VHS

Blade Runner, VHS, and collectors tin DVD

Brazil we have twice on VHS, I`m sure the missus knows why

Then of course there`s Star Wars, where I have at least 1 set of VHS tapes of Ep 4-6, the special edition DVD box set, then the individual most recent versions. Ep 1 I have on VHS, and DVD, Ep2 and 3 DVD
then I`ll have them all again in Sep on the Ultimate blu ray collection.

Indiana Jones boxset on DVD, and have Raiders on VHS, from back in the ay when they came in oversized box and cost a fortune!

not exact but Matrix I have at least 4 copies inc the briefcase one from way back, I robot 3 is including the head one, Field of dreams 3 or 4 inc couple i got in usa, star wars 2 at least, Leon 3 and Dances with Wolves 4..i could go on but u get the drift :)

Triple dipped with Aliens at least, not sure on anything else until I decide on Star Wars Eps IV to VI.

Double dipped loads though, mainly VHS to DVD but also some DVD to BD...

Ah, I forgot the Matrix films. Had at least four copies of each of those, what with the original DVD releases, the Ult. Collection, and the HD DVD and BD sets. I`ve actually had about six copies of The Matrix, as I had R1, R2 and R4 single discs, then the three sets. That`s probably the film I`ve bought the most then...

I`ve found that I am beginning to go off certain films, which is preventing me from indulging in the repeated dip. I used to love the Lethal Weapon movies when I was a lot younger. I bought the first three on VHS pan and scan, then on Widescreen VHS, then I got the vanilla DVDs for 1-4, and then I got the Extended Edition DVDs for 1-3, trading in the vanilla discs.

Then I learned that Lethal Weapon 2 was cut, and I shouldn`t have traded it in. So I went looking for the original vanilla disc again. But when I eventually got it, it was from a later pressing so that was cut as well. So 5 Lethal Weapon 2s have passed my hand.

The funny thing is, that ever since Mel Gibson started in on his mid-life crisis, I haven`t had the urge to watch any of his movies again. So I probably won`t ever go Blu for Lethal Weapon.

I was so close to buying the Matrix on Blu-ray yesterday. The picture quality improvement alone would be worth it, not to mention it`s uncut. But it`s the sequels that are holding me back. I love the first film, but the sequels not so much. But having just the first Matrix by itself on Blu, next to the sequels on DVD would irk my inner obsessive.

Oddly I`ve ended up doing just that recently but I didn`t bother with buying the sequels on DVD so not such a problem for me as I just watched other people`s copies or used Sky Movies.  I only owned The Matrix on DVD and now only that one on BD.  And such a better experience with tons of extras, including bizarrely some jukebox of around 40 different tracks that I`m sure I`ll never get round to playing alongside the Matrix Revisited documentary.
