Deathly Hallows to filmes as 2 movies - Good idea?

enemyonpc (Elite) posted this on Monday, 14th January 2008, 08:38

Just read at AICN that the cast have been told to expect Deathly Hallows to be filmed as 2 movies. Does anyone think this is a good decision? I know lots of people were dissapointed with the amount missing from the other films so there`s the benefit of a more complete transition given the length of the book itself. I`m sure the financial benefit won`t have factored into the decision though:D.

I think it`s a good idea provided both parts are long and the gap isn`t too long in between the releases. I`d pay extra to see the films together (without having to get up and move!) once the second film is out. Obviously there`ll be a financial advantage to the studio, but I can also see cinemas running promotions like "Present your tickets for part 1 for a free child`s ticket to part 2", etc.

I`m glad nothing more was included, they are already all too long as it is. If it means having a two part film that`s totalling 4 hours, rather than one that`s almost 3 (for example) it`s probably the best thing to do.

and yet they still managed to butcher the plot while at the same time having long pauses in the action (especially in the first 2 abortions)

I would love the last movie to be 2 films, but they would have to fill that time honestly, not just padding time. However, in order to follow the book faithfully, they`re going to have to go back and fill in a lot of stuff that was cut from the first 5 films.

that said, although the right honourable gentleman above references AICN for the story, it originated in the murky depths of the daily mail, from an article that went to extraordinary lengths with it`s `close sources` and `industy insiders`.

Quote:
Harry Potter fans are set to get a double treat in the film of the final story - and movie makers are set to double their money.

Crew working on the sixth Potter film, Harry Potter And The Half-Blood Prince, have been told J.K. Rowling`s seventh novel, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows, will be released in two halves.

For film-makers Warner Bros, whose first five Potter films have made £2.5billion in box office receipts - more than any other movie series - it could mean a £500million bonus in ticket sales.

But sources insist the reason behind the two-movie plan is artistic rather than financial.

Double feature: Daniel Radcliffe with Alan `Mad Eye Moody` GleesonThis was the caption under the article`s photograph, just to illustrate how much faith should be put in this article

Quote:
The books got progressively longer - the first, the Philosopher`s Stone, had 223 pages while Deathly Hallows has 776 - and fans have complained chunks of later novels have been left out of films.

A film source said: "There`s so much to fit that the view is the last movie should be in two halves. There is a huge battle when Harry, played by Daniel Radcliffe, takes on Voldemort that needs to be done really well."

And Ms Rowling points out on her website: "It is simply impossible to incorporate every storyline into a film under four hours long."

At Warner Bros, who are rumoured to be thinking of Oscars and a big-name director such as Steven Spielberg for the final film, a spokesman said:

"People are discussing all possibilities."

So with that in mind, don`t be surprised to find it`ll be a 2.5 hours flick with no Griphook, Dobby or dragon.

On a side note, I`m just waiting 10 year after the last movie, when the rights can be re-issues, and the BBC (or ITV, but please, Not Sky) make a 52-part miniseries, and leave nothing out...

EDIT: I`d just like to point out, before the inevitable happens, that JK has NO control whatsoever over the movies, other than editorial input (she told tham not to cut Kreacher from OotP). The length and basic content is all down to WB and Steve Cloves. So we`ll have none of this silly `money-grabbing` nonsense.

Finished reading Deathly Hallows before Christmas but have just gone back and read the last 150 pages again. It really is a fantastic book and to do all the plotlines justice could easily be split into 2 decent length films. But as said, they need to be released not too far apart - and filmed simultaneously..
There were times in the others where (you thought) Dobby was vital to the plot (gillyweed?) but they just changed it. In this one though he really does have a part to play. Likewise the dragon scene could be great. Maybe they could change it so Percy gets killed instead though... ;)
The chapter towards the end of the book "Princes Tale" contains an incredible amount of information that pretty much explains the whole 7 books. That needs to be done so carefully and well too..

Bizarre, that`s exactly what I did

Totally, but there`s one aspect of the princes tale that relates to `dudley demented` in OotP that I haven`t seen anyone pick up on yet;

Just after Petunia makes her shock statement about the dementors, Harry asks her how she knows about Dementors and Azkaban. Petunia replies that she heard `That Horrid Boy telling her about it, years ago`.

Everyone assumed that she was talking about James..

it worked with Kill Bill, although the gap between releasing them at cinema seemed a bit long. WB would probably do the same, so you can release part 1, wait 4 months, release the vanilla dvd of that film, release part 2 at cinema, then a couple of months later release the 2nd film on dvd, and the box set of both.

then a few months later release the extended cuts of all them, before releasing a super boxset of all them with new special effects which need touching up for Blue Ray;)

The official word from WB is that the Daily mail is an attention-seeking rag.

[*]The crew wouldn`t have been told to `prepare for 2 movies` as they`re busy filming HBP, and nothing has been arranged regarding the last movie, which doesn`t start shooting for a year.

[*]The script doesn`t exist, so there`s no way the DM could have gained any kind of inside information about the film.

[*]The script CAN`T exist, not while the WGA strike is still going. Steve Cloves can`t legally put pen to paper until an agreement is reached.

However, the seed of speculation is planted, but they`ve been talking about double-films since Goblet..
