Page 1 of DVD for testing 5.1 system
DVDs & Films Forum
Got my system setup and working finally (I hope), and am wondering what would be the "ultimate" test of the system - so can yous recommend me a DVD with full 5.1 which will show the full range of the system i.e. put stuff through the rears, and make the sub jump??
I dont know if I am making myself clear or not! I have tested the matrix and braveheart on the system - and though the picture and the result was breathtaking, I am looking for something else which will showcase the full potential of the system...
Any suggestions???

I use the first battle scene in LotR: FOTR. Galadriels narration is good for chacking out your centre, the arrows fly all over the sound scape for the battle and, finally, when sauron dies he explodes in a huge bassy `boooooooooooooooooooooom`.
The obiwan/jango fett asteroid chase in AOTC is also good for similar reasons. The sonic charges go `Clllllllllllllllaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnng` and the lasers fly all over the place.
The opening sequence to GITS: SAC is also good for a 5.1 musical work out.
I usually use a the white noise calibration test, then a combination of these three to get it sounding how I want it.
What im listening to (if youre interested)

RE: DVD for testing 5.1 system
The Lord Of The Rings (especially the first one, in the prologue battle where Sauron is slain, sending out a massive shockwave-type-thingy across the battlefield - sphincter-looseningly cool 8) ) EDIT... aww, beat me to it lol
The Hulk
Master & Commander: The Far Side Of The World (astonishing use of the surround channels and the LFE in the storm sequence is awesome)

Any of the Star Wars prequels. They rule. The Matrix films are also pretty cool. Lord of the Rings. Battle Royale. Fight Club. Sin City. Star Trek: First Contact. Saving Private Ryan. Taegukgi. Basically loads ;)

It`s not easy being different. It`s not easy being cool....but somehow I manage....
Mines of Moria from LOTR. Superb `operatic` chanting from the rears, great `trumpets` and arrows whizzing past your ears.. :D
Ste
We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..
X-Men is quite a good one, a lot of use of the surround channels. Phone Booth is a good one to make sure your front 3 speakers are set-up properly too.
Gladiator as well!
But I`d agree, LotR and Star Wars, can`t go wrong there!

Thanks for the replies - LOTR it is going to be tonight then... will be much to the chagrin of the wife :)

You didnt mention if your set-up was Dolby Digital or DTS Surround, if its DTS your looking for play the Extended Edition of The Two Towers and watch the intro where the Balrog and Gandalf are fighting while falling, sheer audio excellence!
if not Dolby will do but DTS is a far higher bit rate and the seperate audio channels are a lot clearer!
