Hostel

Anyone else seen this yet? Really enjoyed it although it`s not quite the genre defining film that Tarantino would have us believe. Great premise and plenty of gore in the 2nd half of the film. Make sure you`re girl friend doesn`t mind boobs cos there`s plenty of them in the first half hour or so! Maybe someone could do a `boob count` cos I can`t remember so many before in a non-porn film! An entertaining gore flick but I still preferred The Hills Have Eyes though...!

I watched it at the weekend and thought it was good, not the gore fest the trailers would have you believe though, its more of a thriller realy. I was expecting the torture scenes to be far more graphic. The mix of horror and storyline was just about right withought being just another blood and guts film. Ive not seen the hills have eyes yet but hope to soon.

Saw it last week and wasn`t sure quite what to expect, certainly seemed to take a while to get going (admittedly, the boob count helped), but when the second part of the film kicked in, torture aplenty, gore, totally OTT.

Now I`m not usually much bothered with gore, I prefer to be unnerved by what you don`t see, fleeting glimpses and the like. Gore can be overdone big time so it just looks silly, but when it works well (a la Day Of The Dead with several `how the fcuk did they do that?` moments) it has you wincing and I found myself doing that several times watching Hostel. In fact, I was damn near sick when the Asian girl reappears towards the end and... well, won`t spoil it. If you`ve seen it you`ll know.

Overall it was, erm, is `enjoyable` the right word? I didn`t walk away thinking I`d wasted a couple of hours but at the same time after the build up it had got it seemed a bit lacking. A bit less blood and a bit more tension would have worked wonders.

Cracking poster though, saw it on the way to work across a massive billboard and had to chuckle.

"Hmm, new teeth, that`s weird. So where was I? Oh that`s right, Barcelona..."

Doctor Who will return in... ooh, Spring sometime.

What was QT`s involvement in this? Saw it at a festival and said he liked it? Ooh, let`s get his name on that..? Or was he really involved? (I really don`t know)

EDIT: googled hostel and tarantino - there`s an official site.

I was really expecting to hate it, but I actually quite liked it.

Not as gory as advertised though, the only bit that unnerved me was...

SPOILER:
the ooze coming out of the Asian chick`s eye after it been cut out/off

Quite simply one of the dumbest films I've ever seen at the cinema. For the reasons why see the 'what I watched this week' thread.

Meh, I prefered Cabin Fever to be honest. I know it`s not popular to say that, but Cabin Fever had a bizarro, surreal thing going on that kept it entertaining. Hostel kinda hints at a real sadistic idea, but it doesn`t pull it off, it`s not violent enough to be gross-out horror, nor subtle enough to posess any tension. It`s an ok watch, but towards the end it just gets f*cking silly as izombie pointed out, things happen which seem to be there to extend the ending. I can almost imagine when they were writing the script that "this happens", and "then this" and "this".

After reading many downer reviews this wasnt as bad as i thought it would be. Well actually it was, it was a terrible film, with gaping holes in, but i found it very entertaining.

Sort of a bad cross between Saw & Hard Target.

6/10

I loved it. :D

Hedonistic, brutal, chilling, engaging and ultimately quite cathartic. Roll on the sequel. :)

Think you must have seen a different film to the one I saw.
