News on definite changes to the original Star Wars trilogy... (spoilers!)

Ben Franklin (Reviewer) posted this on Saturday, 24th July 2004, 12:53

Read over at MF.com and theforce.net forums for news on changes made to the trilogy.

I know for definite that ROTJ is *available*, and this seems to be all they are talking about.

The Shaw headshot has been changed at the end of ROTJ, with lots of people complaining that it doesn`t look quite right. Seems those AICN.com pics weren`t fakes! Also, there`s been some other alterations, like the removal of his eyebrows when Luke removes Vaders helmet, and some extra CGI in the celebration scene of Naboo(in place of Coruscant I think). Thankfully the rancor has finally been fixed, with the matte lines being removed. Someone else noted that the line about Leia remembering her mother while talking to Luke on the Ewok Village veranda has either been omitted, or modified.

A pic or two for you...

Some other notes on changes, though I don`t know how factual they are considering people have only definitely seen ROTJ so far.

Episode IV: A New Hope DVD:

* Light Sabers changed for Vader versus Ben Kenobi Death Star duel.
* TractorBeam control now in Aurebesh.
* Han and Greedo scene slightly changed (everyone`s seen this).
* Jabba the Hutt redone from Special Edition Jabba.
* Boba Fett still mugs camera.
* Han still steps on tail - "You`re a wonderful human being" - still there.
(The scene is an improvement over the SE - however, still not great.)

Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

* Emperor replaced with Ian McDiarmid.
Dialogue in this scene has been slightly modified, indicating either that the Emperor knows it was Luke who nuked the Death Star, or that he is Vader`s son. Maybe both. Otherwise, dialogue remains in tact. Emperor`s theme from Jedi also added into the scene.

From the pics I`ve seen, it all looks amazing. Though I think there`ll be a few unhappy people to hear of these changes.

Anyone know what the "Boba Fett still mugs camera" shot refers to?

It`s at the end of the Jabba scene in Ep4, where he walks into the middle of the frame, stops and looks around. You can tell he has been composited in, and it`s quite cheesey... as if just being in the background wasn`t enough :/

Changes sound disturbing, but I`ll hold off on my judgement until I get them in my paws ;)

Expected more of a respone from you chewie! Would have this on the download now, if it weren`t for the fact that the first time I see these new editions I want them to be the official DVDs. I can wait, its not too long now...

You do realise the agony I`m in, waiting for these fecking films to be released. Writing about it just makes it worse ;)

Seriously, there is not much that can be said that hasn`t already.

What is true though, is that George Lucas is unstoppable. But we`ll see. I`m happy that Ian McDiarmid is now in Ep5, because that was always a sore thumb for me (the Emperor was a woman, with monkey eyes and the voice of Clive Revill :/ ), but the dialogue should not be changed. McDiarmid is one of the best actor`s in the Saga, and his character continuity is now complete.

But taking out Sebastian Shaw`s head at the end is just wrong... it seems so wrong... but I`m thinking that`s maybe because Shaw is dead and it feels like disrespect.

I don`t mind Lucas fiddling with his films, but he should at least put out the original, untouched versions onto DVD. He owes it to the history of film, and it certainly would do him no damage (and it would make a lot of fans happy). If he did, I would definitely buy both versions.

You and me both, fuzzball. ;) I think just about every SW fan would be a happy bunny to see the originals in their original state. By all means George can fart around with the films for his own entertainment/ to match up with the new stuff; all anybody asks for is the choice, and he doesn`t seem to care.

If he really really wants to make the fans kiss his feet, sacrifice fatted Banthas to him etc., all he has to do is add the OVs to the disc set as bonus goodies, like Universal did with the ET SE.

Replacing Shaw`s head is only going half way as well. If you are going to replace his head with a younger version of DV, they why leave Alec Guiness in and not put in the younger version, ie, McGregor. I would have left well alone personally, but if you do one, it only makes sense if you do both. Of course sir Alex`s agent and estate has more punch that a basically un-known actor!

Because Obi Wan didn`t get lured to the dark side. They`ve replaced Anakin`s head with the one he had when he was still a light-side Jedi, before he was "murdered" (from a certain point of view) by Darth Vader.

Irrespective of what you think of people messing with the original trilogy, it does make some sense.
