Stamp Out VCDs

snafu (Competent) posted this on Saturday, 16th November 2002, 02:14

This is supposed to be a forum about DVD hacks yet a vast amount of space is taken up with query`s about enabling VCD and SVCD functions on obscure players. Let`s stop this madness. VCD is an inferior format that needs to be consigned to history as soon as possible. Where can you buy a VCD in the UK legitimately? Not in HMV or Virgin I`m sure. Face the facts, the black market trade in these things is ripping off the consumer and fuelling crime. Let`s put a stop to it now.

VCDs fuelling crime!!!!!
I`m sure the government will put it top of their agenda at the next debate :o)

Ok, the quality sucks, but as long as you can pick up a film for a couple of quid thats not even at the flicks yet....people will do it.

VCDs will die out with the uptake of DVD writers but the crap quality of ripped of unreleased films will still be put on DVD instead of CD

This thread has been moved here from the hack help forum. (Moderators - you should at least add a comment to this effect when you do this, otherwise you might make the original poster look rather silly!)

It`s also possible to put digital camera pictures onto VCD.

There`s a lot of legitimate material on VCD, either home produced or commercially produced in other countries.

Calling the legitimate commercial products "piracy" is ridiculous. If you want a word for that, call it the smuggling that it is.

I fully support the need for VCD hacks on DVD players - some of us have been collecting VCDs since the early days of the Philips CDi. If I couldn`t find a VCD compatible DVD player I wasn`t going to buy one, I don`t wanna spend a small fortune on re-purchasing all the films I own on DVD!

As for the so-called `black-market` in buying pre-release pirates of films on VCD, I don`t support in it, but each to their own. There is really no need as you can buy legitimate copies of most new movies from officially licensed suppliers in China & Malaysia (where the format is VERY popular) before they reach DVD in the UK - the majority of VCDs are ported from the US DVD releases, and in alot of cases films come out even earlier than the US because there is no cinema market for them in these countries.

I like that, you should trademark that slogan now. :)

Clearly not that unloved by the establishment as the latest edition of DVD Review has a cover disc of Red Dwarf (Future Echoes Episode) in VCD format. Interesting though that this mag has slagged off the format in the past

I buy kids (Power Rangers) VCD`s from Malaysia and at 3.00 per official disc they are well worth the money, if only to give me a quiet life at times.
