Wonder if these are only available from the Safeway stores that have an "Entertainment Centre" ? (see their website) If so then it`s a 50 mile round trip for me. :(

I have a few on my doorstep, so hope to hear more.

Two quick questions though:

(1) Is it multi region hackable?
(2) Will it read and write to four speed DVD R/RW disks?

Got my fingers burnt with the Grundig. It was multi region out of the box but would not recognize Memorex 1-4x DVDR.

Saw the Yamada in Richer Sounds today. £150.

Very happy with mine. I`ve had it just over a month.

1, mine came multi region from Richer Sounds, don`t know for sure, but I think it was made multi-region by them as it had been set up by them (had me for a bit confused as I first tried to go through set up when I hooked it up until I realised it had been done for me already. Plus the multi-region mark was a sticker on the box and not pre-printed as such.

2. Yes. I have used the following 4X with no problem:
TDK DVD+RW 1-4x. Just the one disc I ordered with the recorder so I had something to record on.

VERBATIM 4x certified DVD+RW. I have about six of these for day to day recordings. £1.39p each.

VERBATIM 4x certified DVD+R. Had about five of these. £0.99p each. Only reason for not buying any more was I use the below for +R disc`s.

BULKPAQ 4x speed DVD+R 25 pack (tub). I`ve used 50 of these so far with 2 going coaster on me. This happened early on and both times I had just put in a long, and I mean LONG disc name. Stopped doing that and no more coasters. £7.99p for 25. THAT`S 32p a disc, I like that. Better that £9-£14 for 3 in a supermaket!!

The Verbatim and Bulkpaq disc`s came from SVP Communication www.svp.co.uk, delivery was £4.99 for 2/3 day delivery by courier (Interlink Express).

Hope this helps, will be green with envy if they are selling for that price, mine was £229.

Certainly a sale item.

Labels the lot for the DVDR70. My local Safeways had stocks of them with the sticker £110 off. Date on label was 24 May - so on offer whilst stocks last for next 3 weeks.

And 20 p off per litre.

Incidentally Toshiba 330 player was down under £60 in the same store.

Found out they do play multiregion with a hack, but will need to get the One for All remote as the Philips remote only allows 25 changes, and if I don`t put it into Region1, I can`t play some of my RCE discs.

Just bought one of these babies and cant wait to get it up and running. Few questions though :-

1. For copying DVD`s (obviously for back-up purposes) does it have to be done from one machine to another or do you play it through the recorder, it stores it, then you put the blank disk in to record?

2. If you do have to record from one machine to another and the machine that plays the original is Multi-Region playing a Region 3 disk, will the DVDR70 record in Region 3?

3. Do I have to manually hack the DVDR70 every time I want to play a Region 1,3 or 4 disk? If not can I get it permanently changed e.g. by Richer Sounds?

4. Where are best places to get disks + cases?

5. Will it go down the road and get me a packet a fags?

Pete, you are going to be seriously disappointed with your machine, because DVD recorders don`t work like you hope.

1) You can`t copy DVDs using a DVD recorder. They`re built not to let you. DVDs (the discs, not the players or recorders) have copy protection to prevent you making digital or analogue copies. Very few DVD recorders have Hard Drives in them to store video before saving it to disc. The best you could hope to do would be hook a player to the recorder via a special (illegal) macrovision filtering lead to remove the copy protection, but then you`d be making a digital-analogue-digital copy which would lose a lot of definition, as well as all the menus, extras etc. The sound would also be converted to DD2.0, losing the 5.1/DTS soundtrack.

2) No, the copy would be region free, but sh*te quality.

3) Hacking Philips kit is problematic at best. You could get it chipped but that`s your gamble.

4) SVP.co.uk

5) No

Sorry if this disappoints. :)
