Page 1 of Zulu £3.99 on CD-WOW
Bargain Buckets Forum
This has got to be the bargain of the week for an absolute classic movie.
RE: Zulu £3.99 on CD-WOW
is this the later DVD version ? Bought the dreadful R1 (or was it R0) last year and regretted it after 5 minutes.
It looks like it`s the crappy R1 version - better off paying the extra for the new release I would think
Don`t know mate all I know is its cheap and its R1 - what was wrong with the one you bought?
Aaagh I just ordered it!
But half the reason I wanted it was to test my TV can handle NTSC OK, never bought an r1 dvd before and this looked like a really cheap way to find out!
Not all that bothered about the quality TBH, I`ll probably only watch it once (great film though). Out if interest though, what are the quality problems (don`t want this to put me off R1!)
Picture quality and sound are not wonderful on the copy I bought from CD-Wow 6 months ago, although strangely it would play on region 2 machines as well ( which made me suspect it was perhaps a pirate print )
but still a wonderful movie. ;-))

Hello Chaps - can you give me some more info as well, what`s the pronlem with the R1? Is it the transfer or more the lack of extras? is it not worth £4? Oh, and the 50p off link doesn`t change the price of this as well. Boo!
This R1 or R0 DVD is widely regarded as one of the weakest transfers of a film that deserves much better. (Thankfully we now have a very good R2 version). Here are the words on one amazon reviewer.
Quote:
One of my favorite films from childhood that gets better with age. The DVD I own now is so pitiful, so cheaply made, that I am willing to pay for another copy to see if I can get a DVD version worth watching. I have a better print that I taped off the History Cannel that the Zulu DVD currently in release. This movie is so beautifully photographed, and so subtle. But the version I own is not color barred or contrast corrected. The dawn approach of the impis (Zulu regiments) against the lightening sky is nothing but black with the "locomotive" (assagai on shields) soundtrack menacingly announcing nothing. The scarlet uniforms of the 41st and 42nd Welsh Foot are dirt brown and the whole thoing seems to be shot through an old unpolarized set of Raybans.

Thanks Mintguy, glad I never bought it now - lesson learnt, you pay for what you get. Will wait for the superior R2 version.
I preordered the R4 special edition from ezydvd.com.au for a tenner.
It`s out on the 6th Dec and sounds like its the same as the R2 version.
