RE: p.c crashing problem - any ideas?

It sounds similar to the problem I had with a packard bell. It started with random crashes then the Pc started dying after about 15 minutes. It was still under warranty, the service engineer came out, said it was the PSU, changed it for a new one. Next day the PC wouldn`t boot at all, he came back fitted a new CPU and everything was ok. I think Emily Howard`s last posting hits the nail on the head.

RE: Best Value DVD players?

I bought a panasonic s 75 from http://www.digital-point.co.uk/dvd.asp and would highly recommend it, (except they always seem to sell out), but apart from the toshiba you mentioned, all the other players are being sold slightly cheaper than the prices you have listed.

They are all multiregional, and they do state that they are RCE compatible and all include free delivery.

I had a problem with this player, where the sound through my amp would cut out for a short moment, during scene changes, on nearly all my dvd`s. I bought a panasonic s75 which has been perfect, so after reading this thread, it seems it wasn`t just mine that had this problem!

Cheers for the quick reply. The reason I mentioned the xv-n33si is that dvdplayers.co.uk are selling it for £103.95 multireg including delivery.

I`ve just found the panasonic dvd-s35 at multiregion magic, where it mentions gamma control as one of it`s specifications, and this is being sold for £99.95 at dvdplayers.It also has a 5 star rating best buy (what video).

I`m a bit strapped for cash but I`m currently avoiding RGB on my tv due to those vertical bands, but if a dvd player with gamma control would help here I`m sorely tempted, but which player do I go for,that`s the problem.

by the way Gingerone what is the main difference between the xv-n33 and the xv-n5

Panasonic dvd-s35 or Jvc xv-n33sl...gamma correction?

Does anyone have either of these players, are they any good, and if so what video adjustments do they both have. I`m looking for one that has gamma correction as well as a brightness/contrast adjust.

Well at the end of the day philips need to sort their tv`s out. It seems unfair to have to fork out for a better dvd player to hide the tv`s shortcomings, but at least you`ve got a better RGB picture now than you had before.

It`s a samsung 224, I have a grundig 210A as a spare in the bedroom. The wife can`t seem to understand the need for another dvd player though (no matter what I say).

So what I need then is a player which has gamma correction as this seems to lighten things without exposing those bands?

What picture tweaks are on the player, and which ones did you use to remedy the problem? If buying a new player will sort it, I`m really tempted, though the wife is sure to put her foot down!!

Have you tested the player with films with misty/sandy backgrounds Gingerone, such as The Mummy and the begining of Harry Potter? If so and everything is ok, then that really is excellent news...and I am a bit jealous!

The worst thing about this set, is when you have a dvd player which does lighten the contrast/brightness of the picture via RGB, the dark vertical bands are exposed in all their F***ING glory.

Sadly the picture is otherwise fantastic......sighhh

Westy, I do indeed intend to leave as soon as possible. In just four years here, the workforce has steadily decreased, placing an increasingly heavier workload on remaining staff, to the point where long standing members have just given up in despair.

The ammount of people who have just walked out, after a few nights here is quite remarkable........I think it`s time for me to start studying!

Life must definately start after Tescos Westy, been stuck on nights here in the Liverpool store for 4 years (drone) and can fully appreciate your feelings mate. This store must have the biggest turnover of staff I have ever seen anywhere, sucks big time!!

Suffers from three dark vertical bands, most notable in RGB mode. Backgrounds like the one in Harry Potter e.g. where the owl is above the street sign, the mist really does show up the bands in all their irritating glory!

Otherwise the tv is okay

Yeah, scart 2 on philips sets, that have only 2 scart sockets, are usually set up for s-vid, so you`ll be okay.

Yeah you`re right Micoman, you can get s-vid through scart 2, but we were just saying that newer tv`s are omitting an extra socket.

Yeah I noticed this when I bought my 6006 a year ago( I wrongly asumed there would be one there). The previous model to the 6006 did have the S-vid socket at the side. Basically your left with one less AV channel than you should have...does this mean Philips are cost cutting on the entry level tv`s?

The black level adjust gently makes the whole picture brighter, a bit like turning the brightness up on the tv but not overpowering it. The samsung only has on or off so there`s no real scope for adjusting it gradually.

An example is Lord of the rings where Gandalf battles saruman in the dark confines of the tower. Where the walls are really dark and in shadow, if the BL is set to on all the detail of the walls is clear to see, switched to off and they lay deep in dark shadow.

Problem is, the darker it looks in the film the more realistic and menacing it looks, it depends on your preference. Suppose that`s why you need a dvd player with more control over picture adjustments.

The Philips 763a sounds like a good bet, it`s worth a try at least. The simple black level adjust on my samsung makes a hell of a difference on dark films.

When you say the RGB picture is dark do you mean there`s hardly any detail visible in shadowy scenes or are they still dark overall even in semi-natural light?

If you do get the Philips I`d be interested to hear of your findings.

I have contrast 64 and brightness 45. If I set the black level on my dvd player to `on` (I leave it to off) the bars show up even more, and the brightness has to be turned down to at least 35 to compensate, can`t win either way.

Sad thing is if the bars weren`t there I`d be extremely happy as the dvd player gives a great picture with black level on or off.

I was wondering wether a philips player might help your RGB problem as I`ve read that they have smart picture adjustments that enable you to choose the colour,contrast and brightness for each individual film.

who knows the philips brand players might be best for this tv ....clutching at straws (just a thought)

Fortunately, (if you can call it that), the RGB picture is actually brighter than my Hitachi 25" 4:3 tv. The thing is, possibly like yourself, I personally hate not being able to see detail in films with very dark scenes/backgrounds, my Grundig player tended to struggle.

So I bought a Samsung S224 which has a black level adjust, great picture and everything, but, now that I can see everything using the BL adjust it then shows up these pain in the a##e black bands!!

I would love this tv but for these vertical lines they ruin an otherwise fantastic RGB picture, it`s possibly the last Philips set I will ever buy!

Is the vertical line you are seeing sometimes dark, and from an RGB source at all Gingerone? As that is what I seem to get on my Philips 6006, but there are three bands, one far right, one left and one a third from the left.

They only seem to appear on backgrounds of similar colour (Harry Potter, the owl sitting on the street sign amongst the mist e.g.) and if the brightness is above 45. Doesn`t seem to happen on the s-video scart though, seems worse with the dvd player in RGB.

Since I noticed it, I can`t seem to..erm..not notice it!
