Samsung DVD-S224 Problem

Meusa (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 25th September 2003, 12:11

I have a probem with this player and some dvd`s.

Recently I watched The Two Towers on this player and every now and again it will pause for a split second on scene changes (not the layer change). Its most noticable when there is a lot of sound or music playing because it cuts out momenterily and its quite annoying. Also when it does do it, if i rewind and play the last few second again it does not repeat the pause, it only seems to be when its been playing the dvd continuosly.

Anyone know why this could be? I know its not the DVD because it does the same on some of the others ive got but not quite as bad, and its only at the change of a scene which is very strange.

Maybe I should use a DVD cleaning disk on the player?

No seems to be something with the machine itself. Mine does it too - problem is mine`s from Powerhouse :-(

Anyone know of there`s a firware upgrade??

Cheers

Very strange indeed. If there is a firmware update how do you go about installing it? I asume you burn it you a CDRW and then put it in the player?

Yep. I`ll get in touch with Samsung tomorrow & see if there`s anything that they can do.

Sounds very strange, I`ve had an S-224 for 18 months and haven`t had a problem with it (including two towers)

I had a problem with this player, where the sound through my amp would cut out for a short moment, during scene changes, on nearly all my dvd`s. I bought a panasonic s75 which has been perfect, so after reading this thread, it seems it wasn`t just mine that had this problem!

The S224 has three problems:

1) If you play a "concert" CD, i.e. one that does not have breaks between the tracks, you will lose about 3 seconds at each track change. Note, that it not a pause, it chops about 3 seconds from the sound.

2) On some DVD`s at some chapter stops there will be a momentary glitch on picture and sound. How obvious the glitch is depends on the picture and sound. For a bad example try chapter 49 of My Fair Lady. This case is repeatable, so that replaying that chapter stop always shows the problem.

3) The same glitch on picture and sound at a chapter stop occurs on other DVD`s, but is not repeated when that chapter stop is repeated. This is the case you note.

When I raised these with Samsung back in March the reply I got was:

>>
We are sorry to learn of the problems you have encountered with your Samsung product.

Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention. Unfortunately our engineers have looked into these issues, which you have brought to our attention, but have no possible upgrades to resolve them at this time.

So they admit the S224 is intrinsically flawed, but are going to do nothing about it.

Mine went back for a refund, which is a pity, as if it were not for these flaws it would be a very good player.
