p.c crashing problem - any ideas?
Hi,
I leave my p.c on all the time but over the last week or so, in the morning the monitor is off as if the p.c is in standby mode.
When you touch a key or the mouse it used to come on but now it does nothing?
The keys don`t appear to work (when hitting number lock) and i have to switch off at the wall and restart the machine ( when it goes through a disc check now)
I`ve scanned for viruses and defragged the disc - anyone else know what might be wrong?
Thanks in advance.

RE: p.c crashing problem - any ideas?
Open up PC case, check CPU fan isnt coated in dust, ditto for vents (case & PSU).
I enjoy being wrong and clueless on other subjects - My wife usually alerts me to which ones, as there seem to be an awful lot around the house.

Thanks - opened it up and power supply and vent holes full of dust as was the cpu fan and heat sink.
I`ve given it a clean, removed heatsink and cleaned it all and put it back together so we`ll see how it goes.
Anything else possible in case this doesn`t solve the problem?
Thanks again.

Have you replaced the thermal compound or pad on the cpu ? pretty sure you have too if you remove the heatsink.

From a professional viewpoint it sounds like it`s f***ed. ;)

The pc is working fine 99% of the time - just some mornings it appears to be in standby and won`t restart without switching off at the wall.
The heatsink kind of fell off anyway - the compound must be so old it has dried out but I replaced the heatsink in the same spot and all appears to be fine. I`m typing this on it anyway!!

Might be worth keeping an eye on the temps on your motherboard . Do a searcxh for `Motherboard Monitor` (or `MBM5`) and download it-let it run in your system tray and you`ll get a constant read out of your case and cpu temps

Get ye to a Maplins or PC shop asap & get some.
*Reminder must get some more myself.*

I guess there is a reason for needing new compound?
Is there somewhere to tell me the cpu temp without downloading the software?

Emily, I`ve just downloaded that software you mentioned as I`d be interested to know what mine`s running at (just curious about these things you know...lol :) ). When I run the wizard after you install it, it asks you to tell it your motherboard type.
All I knew was that it was made by MSI (it`s a Medion PC (Cybermaxx from ToysRus)). I`ve found all my computer specs by running the full test on PC PItstop, and printed them out. It says my mainboard is an MSI MS-6747. This isn`t in the list in Motherboard monitor, (I guess it`s a custom board for Medion, I know they do use them). Any idea which one to choose, or does it mean I won`t be able to use it?
The next nearest numbers in Motherboard monitor are MS 6701 or MS 6760
Any idea?
Thanks :)
Mark. :)
