RE: Liteon Service and G.E Warranty - amazing
I could hardly believe it. At best I thought I was going to get a hefty repair bill!
This sort of thing never happens to me.
On the basis of my luck with this I`m going to do the Euromillions! hehe

not exactly a retailer, but.....
My poor overworked 5005 Liteon went into the shop for repair ten days back. I really have used it to death! I reckon I must have done around 2,000 6 hour SKY and set-top discs (sad ain`t it) :)
Today I took delivery of the 5006 `cos they said they couldn`t repair it, brand spanking new replacement with a 25 spindle of disks as goodwill.
How much better does it get?
Liteon/GE rules - OK!

RE: How can I connect Sky box to PC Monitor (cheap adaptor/cable?)
hi Close,
I answered this one, plus your other one in your posting `cheap tv tuner`
And yes, your sender/receiver will work (and you shouldn`t need any extra adaptor either)

RE: Monitor setting problems!!!!
Hi Andy
If it was fine before you fiddled, it`s likely to still be fine now unless you did some serious resolution adjustments via the settings on the computer, rather than the front of monitor controls. Those computer ones can actually ruin an old monitor, but I doubt if it is THAT old and this is what you do to restore the screen.
I think what you have done is the trapezoid settings and then maybe moved it so much one way or the other for centering. I don`t know which monitor it is so here are some of the ways of getting it back.
1) If you have a circular wheel adjustment, push it in or pull it out. Turn the wheel to where you see distorted rectangular shapes one is called parallelogram, one pin cushion, one trapezoid, one pin balance and one zoom. Press or pull the wheel again to make the adjustments, use them in conjunction with eachother.
Then press or pull to confirm the setting for THAT item only and move on to the centering areas (up down right n left) do all those and save each one too. Lastly do the `rotation` which saves you having to cock your head to one side to read stuff but if you do that first then the rest is harder.
You may have a `recall` feature which will give you the factory set-up settings - in which case navigate to there using the wheel to there and select it, then fiddle as above.
2) If you have 4 or 5 buttons - press any one to invoke the settings. Then you wander around roughly as above, but you may have additional items to contend with and the display reverts very quickly. In which case go to `recall` first, then fiddle as above.
Hope this helps, and a monitor is highly unlikely to become unserviceable because you fiddled with the user control on it, so keep trying it will almost certain be restorable.

RE: Cheap TV tuner??? for portable DVD player
I`d thought about this as I have a 19" lcd computer monitor supplied as part of my works computer system. Found lots of them in fact but none are particularly cheap, plan to spend about £50-£70 but you do get a remote control.
here are some - hunt around tho as e-bay may have something cheaper.
TV Station 100
Acer RX 120
but what I did was simpler, easier, and way cheaper (though it is a `home only` solution and isn`t a tuner per-se). It does have a lot of benefits tho as you can watch telly / dvd / listen to cd`s (in fact anything you`re playing) anywhere within about 50 yards (have even loaned this to my neighbour across the road to watch ordinary Channel 4 telly which we don`t get here, so he can watch the cricket.. it takes all sorts.. hehe)
You can also move this around dead easy, change your SKY channel with it, move it from room to room in seconds, use it on your computer, in fact it does everything except bring you a cuppa tea in bed. Don`t be fooled by the price, this thing really does work and is as easy as pie to set up.
I`ve wanted somewhere to rave about this for ages - this is what it`s called for the search at the site, the delivery is free and very fast and I cant recommend it highly enough

RE: B&Q INSTORE SALE..response to Curious99`s silly statement
email me snookums - i still have a trade account and you can use it with pleasure .. let`s you in the whole site but the details are sparse even on there in terms of illustrations etc - dont forget they have about 40 zillion different departments and if you want plumbing you have to go to a trade plumbing branch which is (almost) entirely a different company

(if anyone spams me i will spam them back, i don`t open anything with attachments other than .jpgs)
RE: B&Q INSTORE SALE..response to Curious99`s silly statement
Fixed, not leaking and looking very nice thanks.
I also do tiling and decorating; isn`t it satisfying seeing the results!
Am not confident with electricity - will be continuing to leave that to the expensive (if you can get one) experts.
£45 an hour Shoes! - very nice if you can get it. I`m happy with £45 a day (net (a lot of us live on that you know)) teaching blind and sight impaired children.
Am buying a new pendulum jig-saw next pay-cheque and getting to work on replacing some knackered floorboards in my appartment. I burned the other one out. Will be buying it from Screwfix.
Oh and by the way if you tap cerebral fluid, if flows to the outside of the head. I presume that`s what you meant? Just you got the direction flow the wrong way around, I hope you don`t do plumbing as one of your various services :-)
I haven`t packed in anything since I got my ph.D 12 years back with the OU. I feel it is good though to obtain a useful qualification, such as Graphic Design and make total use of it as you obviously do. Further education for all is one of the things which makes Britain great.
I didn`t know Shipman offered brain surgery, I thought he was a general practioner. Did I miss something?
I am sure I don`t fit into a minority when I say I do not like maintenance tradespeople. I have moved around quite a lot in my work in the last 20 years and have owned 6 properties in that time. It was half-way through property one when I was living in London that I worked out most people were truly being conned and I fully intended not to fall into that category.
The book you referred to is in fact a good reference, I own it; another excellent book is the Readers Digest DIY Manual which lives in my second bathroom (where I just put me new tap)
Screwfix, in my opinion, is the way forward for DIY. Shame it doesn`t have more detail for the layperson on the site. That`s where the Tommy Walsh`s of this world would come in really handy.

ps - the day I see a painter and decorator do a better job than I can is the day I keep him and hire him out for profit.
RE: B&Q INSTORE SALE
I don`t like B & Q much either, nor do I like Homebase (looks identical to argos nowadays) but it`s true sometimes you can grab a bargain and walk out feeling all tail-waggy and eleated.
It just doesn`t happen often.
You can bet your bottom dollar that unless these guys are doing a refurbishment and need the space desperately, they won`t be selling off very much of use to the general public and it certainly wont be at less than cost unless they have cut a no-return policy with their supplier.
The new phenomena which is DIY - now 15 years or more old, is due for a proper shake-up.
A group of properly organised, cost-aware and customer driven people need to set up and clean up. Which would happen in the shortest time as we all have this DIY bug to a greater or lesser degree.
I think FOCUS have come closest to this in the late 90`s but sadly they have deviated to the average and spent far too much attention to the accessory than to the core function of DIY itself.
Tommy Walsh and his `bunch of muscles workmen` could probably specify and organise a store which could re-captivate the general public`s desire to make their homes better and instill their confidence enough to attempt things safely and competantly too.
I equally dislike workmen. Plumbers and Electricians are sometimes really necessary people to have around admittedly, but can they justify charging more than a brain surgeon to fix that burst pipe or get the consumer unit reconnected?
As for decorators well...... don`t get me started.
I think that basic DIY skills and home maintenance should be part of the school curriculum for both sexes. Safe handling of electricity in the home, how to put water through pipes without leaks, hanging a roll of wallpaper, preparing wood for painting - fixing a broken window pane, etc etc., should be somethng we can all master.
I`m just off to fit the tap I bought at LIDLS today for a tenner. And a very pretty tap it is too. I fitted the one in my kitchen - what can be so hard?

RE: Screenburn - How long does it take?
Fascinating question.
If you were in the USA you could probably sue for an etched in image of a channel logo on your telly screen.
Might be worth looking to see if anyone has managed to do it (and the yanks sue if the cellophane is broken on the box it comes in) and if not then I would assume it`s quite a long time!
ps my friend Dean up the road is a sad ol bu`gr and only watches discovery men n motors and the one which does airline crashes/reconstructions. He`s has his RPTV for at least 3 yrs and no logo on there... yet

RE: Help please - SKY stereo on AV only?
Hi Adam,
Well the scart comes out of the digibox into the dvd recorder - that ensures I receive a stereo output for that at least - problem is tho, that the dvdr recorder has to be turned on to watch a stereo prog. on the telly. Wouldn`t be a problem apart from the fact my LITEON is old and noisey now, even when it isn`t recording (it`s more than two yrs old and 2000+ dvd`s recorded on it, it`s in for rest and recon in the shop at the moment)
From the back of the sky box there`s a regular female coaxial connector which goes into the distribution box, the cables then go from there to the tellies around the apt.
.... is there anything I can do to get SKY in stereo anywhere else than the AV (only) ?
I only really started to notice it this week `cos being the tite rsed person I am I just tend to record movie after movie whilst I have the SKY service turned on, and tend to listen to terrestrial tv in my office or in the kitchen.
Like I said it`s not life or death and I have dvd players with all the tellies so if there`s something like LIVE8 or top of the pops or glastonbury I record it anyways. I am pretty much forced to use the digibox for all channels except BBC1 and 2 as I am at sea level in Wales (oh I didnt include S4C but then I don`t speak Welsh and it`s truly awful, even if you are a Welsh speaker I`ve been told)
Thanks for the help.

RE: Is a home printed photo acceptable by the passport office?
Thanks Rassilon, thats a great idea, considering two things
1) our photo booth charges £2.50 for four nasty little unchangable prints
2) 6 for £1.20 and you can change your mind
3) Posted home too
what a clever little site ain`t it.

Help please - SKY stereo on AV only?
I`ve been wondering for ages why I only get mono out of my distribution box (where I `pump` sky around the house) to the other tellies.
It`s a dead posh one, cost me £50 not my usual cheap compromises.
It`s not the end of the world but is there anything I`m doing wrong? And is there any way I can get stereo anywhere except for the AV scart primary connection?
Thanks guys,
Hilary
RE: DVD/VCRCombi
I agree with eggster, because after a while and after you`ve finished off copying your videos, you won`t be using your vcr very much at all. Stick the vcr in the space where the old tapes used to be :-)

RE: advice on dvd recorder hdd system please
What sort of EPG do you mean, because as far as I know, none of them come with that, although a lot have tuners built in. Carry on using your digibox for that.
If you already have a sky box then you don`t have to sign up for a year - take my example - always broke. Have my box on for typically 6 months of the year, two of those will be December/January cos I am a big kid for the Christmas movies etc.
SKY do from time to time do specials - and right now if you sign up you can get sky movies world for 1/2 price for three months (and you dont have to continue on after). All you have to do is do a months notice - therefore if you fancy it on for all of September - ask the lady/guy after you have placed your order to go thru to accounts and give them your months notice.
I personally don`t have a HDD system on either sky or my dvdr (which is a LITEON 5005) but I get round this with using re-writeable discs, then copying what I fancy from the player to recorder after. It is a very cheap way round it - some people call it nasty:-) but it works for me.
I have installed a few HDD systems for friends and tested them and to be honest one is much the same as the other - they are all so new no-one knows how durable they are. So if you find one you like at the price you want to pay - take out an extended warranty with someone like D & G and get covered for all eventualities including drops, kids poking their crayons in the player drawer, etc etc., it`s all the same price so make sure you get an all eventualities warranty.
Ones I have set up are:-
LITEON 5045 - 160 gig HDD - simple to use, cheap for what you get, dvd drive is a bit noisey.
JVC DR-HM20EK - 80GB Hard Drive - again very simple to use, good value, picky with discs tho.
Ellion 950C - 120 gig HDD - simple to use, only uses + discs
JVC DR-MX1SEK - 160 gig with a vcr too. Nice but quite dear and complicated instructions, great for doing recording from your old video tapes. Only does - discs.
That`s the only ones I`ve seen in the flesh, so to speak. Lots of people have them on here tho so I am sure you will get plenty of recommendations.
Good luck,
Hilary
