Help please - SKY stereo on AV only?

Curious99 (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Sunday, 17th July 2005, 11:59

I`ve been wondering for ages why I only get mono out of my distribution box (where I `pump` sky around the house) to the other tellies.

It`s a dead posh one, cost me £50 not my usual cheap compromises.

It`s not the end of the world but is there anything I`m doing wrong? And is there any way I can get stereo anywhere except for the AV scart primary connection?

Thanks guys,

Hilary

What sort of connections are you using?

Neither of the RF outputs on your Sky Digibox will output stereo audio, only mono. This is because (to my knowledge) RF is incapable of doing so unless NICAM Stereo is supported by the original source (i.e. analogue terrestrial TV) and also by the TV itself.

Sky Digital does not output NICAM Stereo.

Hi Adam,

Well the scart comes out of the digibox into the dvd recorder - that ensures I receive a stereo output for that at least - problem is tho, that the dvdr recorder has to be turned on to watch a stereo prog. on the telly. Wouldn`t be a problem apart from the fact my LITEON is old and noisey now, even when it isn`t recording (it`s more than two yrs old and 2000+ dvd`s recorded on it, it`s in for rest and recon in the shop at the moment)

From the back of the sky box there`s a regular female coaxial connector which goes into the distribution box, the cables then go from there to the tellies around the apt.

.... is there anything I can do to get SKY in stereo anywhere else than the AV (only) ?

I only really started to notice it this week `cos being the tite rsed person I am I just tend to record movie after movie whilst I have the SKY service turned on, and tend to listen to terrestrial tv in my office or in the kitchen.

Like I said it`s not life or death and I have dvd players with all the tellies so if there`s something like LIVE8 or top of the pops or glastonbury I record it anyways. I am pretty much forced to use the digibox for all channels except BBC1 and 2 as I am at sea level in Wales (oh I didnt include S4C but then I don`t speak Welsh and it`s truly awful, even if you are a Welsh speaker I`ve been told)

Thanks for the help.

Hilary

I do not think there is much else you could possibly do to get stereo audio in all locations. I think perhaps a distribution box that supports a SCART input and several SCART outputs is the only method of acheiving it.

If you really wan`t stereo audio you could always try using the RCA audio connections on the back of the digibox in some way... or maybe just a very long SCART interconnect.
