This is not an area in which I have much experience - so please be patient....

O2 have just told me that they intend to switch off my old Philips C12 and discontinue the old `U` tariff that I`m on sometime in January - I assume that this will be for all dinosaurs and that they`re not just picking on me.

Can I simply take the SIM card from my C12, cut it down to size with a pair of scissors (no, there are no cut-outs on it) and drop it into the MYX2-2 and expect it to work? What would be carried across on the SIM card - the phone number? the credit? (I hope so, there`s over £15 on it) the contact numbers?

One or two hours hunting around using Google as my guide, I am led to believe that if, after all my O2 credit is used up, I subsequently want to switch the phone over to Orange - I may as well throw it away and buy a new one as the cost of unlocking it would be about the same price. Can anyone tell me otherwise?

Thanks for your input ra2000, I should have made it clear that my short response was specific to this thread, not a general statement about the Sale of Goods Act.

However, doesn`t the onus for proving that the fault was a manufacturing one switch from supplier to consumer 6 months after purchase, not 12?

In the case of this camera, I think that we can safely say that the life expectancy has not yet been reached and since the flash sensor failure was described as a `common fault` then it would reasonable to say that this model had a design flaw (or an `inherent fault`) which affected its durability,ie it was not `fit for purpose`. It should have been easy to win damages (eg a reduction in the repair bill commensurate with the age of the camera).

It is not in the interest of suppliers to `play fair` when it comes to dealing with faulty goods, if they can get rid of us by saying that it`s up to the manufacturers or it`s out of warranty etc, they will. We have to keep pushing and be prepared to refer the case to the local trading standards office.

I would advise anyone with faulty goods (and you know that you`re not to blame) to check the forums to see if others are having similar problems and don`t forget to post details of your equipment`s faults. That way we can uncover the design flaws and build stronger cases against shoddy uncooperative suppliers.

I`ll bet they didn`t know that, in UK law, suppliers have a liability for faulty goods for up to six years - even without an extended warranty.

I can understand that a price change might occur between reserving an item and it being collected - hence the `day you collect` bit of their rider - fair enough.

However, I know from personal experience that items can still be reserved at a lower price on their website even after a manager has refused to sell at the advertised price. This is misleading advertising and it has been happening too frequently, they are not one-off `mistakes` and for too long - I made a 40mile round trip before Christmas, with my less-than-an-hour-old reservation in my hand, to be treated this way. Even when a manager does honour their commitment, you are made to feel like they`ve done you a favour. It`s just not on!!

I urge all those who have been treated this way to contact both the local trading standards office and submit a complaint to the Advertising Standards Agency using this form: www.asa.org.uk/asa/how_to_complain/complaints_form/

but where some bozo is hogging the middle lane. At speed, `undertaking` is always more dangerous since the driver of leading vehicle will have a more restricted view of that area of the road. Just try `undertaking` an artic and see what I mean. This is the same reason left-hand drive wagon from the continent should be required to have additional mirrors or even on board cctv - ask Mike Reid about it.

As for your other point. I don`t like speed cameras and yet I for one don`t want the speed limits increased. I should qualify that - I don`t like the speed cameras that measure your speed at a particular point on the road - they`re far too dangerous for all sorts of reasons - I`d much rather have those that calculate your average speed over a distance.

If the government wants to fit gps gadgets to control congestion, then let`s push for them to go the whole hog and get them to calculate the speed of vehicles too - the fines could be added instantaneously to the congestion charges. Alternatively, our engines could have electronically controlled governors which stop us from exceeding the speed limit in the area in which we`re driving. There`d be no more speeding fines at all, no more pile-ups in the fog, our cars could be slowed to a crawl at the behest of traffic control. Get-away cars could be stopped remotely by the police. The technology is there however, with no more speeding fines, how would the system be financed?

In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.

Hmm, at my local Co-op near Wolverhampton the DVD recorder is the same make but model 2800. It`s DVD+R/RW only and so doesn`t offer simultaneous record/playback.

Reserved one yesterday, at Kidderminster (20 miles away). Check website this morning - price still showed £14.99. Got to store at 3pm today, cashier asked for £23.99. I pointed out price quoted - cashier fetched manager who said that the prices had gone up but they would honour the reserved price. Checked wesite a few minutes ago - it still shows £14.99.

It`s clear that they need to get their act together - they obviously already know what they`re going to do with the prices when they let you reserve one until the end of the next day.

I know that a contract hasn`t been formed when you make the reservation (no doubt that this is why they do it this way - it prevents the type of fiasco in whch Tesco/Virgin/Woolies have just found themselves) but it strikes me that if they don`t honour the price quoted then there is an element of setting deliberately misleading prices. It`s like if the shelf price says 25p for the tin of baked beans but the price at the till has gone up to 35p whilst you`re walking around the shop.

If the manager hadn`t honoured the £14.99 price, I think that I would have raised a blue stink - and asked for my petrol money!!

On the other hand I bought a chainsaw from them last year - the price in store was £10 cheaper than when I`d reserved it the day before - I didn`t force them to take the extra tenner!

Emily, I thought that I`d use SiSoftware Sandra (2002) to benchmark this drive to determine which connection was the fastest to use. Here are my results:

Firewire: 24030
USB2.0: 20540
This compares well with my 120Gb internal drive (ATA100) at 29500.

Now all I`ve got to work out is why my 120Gb slave HD is coming in at only 2800.

Did this last year, we had problems too. They won`t give you the money back until they are sure that you are keeping the goods - by which time they`ll have forgotten and hope that you will too.

Re: the multi-region aspect, I seem to think that AnyDVD allows you to read discs from any region. However, some drives don`t play ball - mine is one of them (a Philips 208K - that`ll teach me to be an early adopter!).

Not bad but I`ve been using http://www.cpc.co.uk which offer all his range plus a hell of a lot more (they are like Maplins but a third of the cost). They are part of the Farnell group.

You can order in all the usual ways (plus phone) and postage is free for orders (exc VAT)over £30 and £4 below. This is by courier and my three orders all arrived the next working day.

One order arrived with two cables missing - a quick phone call, apologies given and the missing cables arrived the next day - no quibbling at all.

Try `em out!.

My Pace skybox gives on screen guide using S - AV, then key number of programme type and use up/down on lower ring, S - <<, S - >> and coloured buttons to navigate.

Next programme is given by S - >>, it took me ages to find the Backup key (blank teletext screen symbol near bottom left)

I agree it could all be a lot easier.

The remote also controls Toshiba 32ZP38 widescreen TV (all functions), Panasonic HS950B vcr, JVC HR-S7700 vcr (all functions inc menus & timer), old Philips On-digital box and Yamaha RX-V630 receiver (almost functions). The programmable key (P>P) gives me an easy way to change the TV directly to skybox.

However, I can`t get it to operate my old X-Wave LB900 DVD player - if anyone has found a code that works, please share.

I know that this model can be bought in multi-region form but is there a straightforward hack when the player is supplied by Toshiba directly?
