SN*****ING - TO SN*****, i.e. to giggle mischevously.

Does it really need censoring, mods?

What`s the world coming to? :/ Surely my sig is much more offensive... :p

RE: Binatone DECT phone twin pack £13.90

I got the last 3 e3300s from Bedford. They are still going for £35 for the base station alone at tesco.com 8)

I got to the counter, paid, the checkout girl then said after they had found the goods they would get someone to carry them to my car as they were over 20 kilos each!

I thanked her but declined the offer.... ;) I was looking all butch and getting admiring looks from the obviously impressed staff until the tiny tiny boxes were carried out by a 16 year old trainee. Then they all started sn*****ing.

Oh well.

RE: Bond tin £10 / Band of Brothers £5 / Alien Quad £5

Got there at 820 - must have been 200 people there already. The queue went down to Wells Street and back towards HMV. By 900 the queue was back past the entrance (350 - 400 in all?).

Took the p**s really - those at the back jsut walked in when the doors opened, leaving us who had queued for ages half way down Oxford Street. Muppets.

DVD box sets gone to the first people in the queue, but got Bowie`s CD box Sound and Vision for £10 from £45 (one of the early bird offers), Rambo trilogy for £19.99, Audrey Hepburn 5 disc box for £35, Python 4 disc box for £25.

Looking around, most is the usual rubbish you paid a fiver for in last Christmas` sales unsurprisingly, but some good deals on books and some box set DVDs.

If you are in the area, it`s worth a peek. If not I wouldn`t bother.

RE: where to get a cheap PC

There`s really no such thing as a cheap computer - it`s a keen market where everyone has a pretty good handle on what`s what. Ebay is the wrong way to go, unless it`s through a company. Buy a lemon and you are going to pay a fortune to find out what`s wrong.

Cheapest decent spec I could find was £259 for

• AMD Athlon XP 2000+
• ATX 4 Bay Midi Tower Case
• 256 MB DDR-RAM
• 40 GB Hard Disk Drive
• 32 MB Graphics (shared)
• 16 x DVD Drive
• 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
• 32 Bit Sound Card, 200W Spks
• 56k V92 Fax/Data Modem
• USB Ports & Lan Card
• Keyboard & Mouse
• Windows ME Pre Installed

Or for £400:

• AMD Athlon XP 2800+
• ATX 4 Bay Midi Tower Case
• Gigabyte GA7VA Motherboard
• 512 MB DDR-RAM
• 120 GB Hard Disk Drive
• 128 MB Geforce FX Graphics
• Fitted 52x24x52 CDR-W
• Fitted separate 16 x DVD Drive
• 1.44 MB Floppy Disk Drive
• 32 Bit Sound Card, 200W Spks
• 56k V92 Fax/Data Modem
• 4 x USB Ports
• Keyboard & Mouse
• Windows ME Pre Inst

I`ve used them before, they`re not bad. And you are able to upgrade any of the options if you find them lacking.

No monitor, but you may not want one if you are upgrading.

RE: Hmmmmm, M$ more concerned with Security than $$$????...

Surely then serial numbers/product activation codes which my cat couldn`t hack with a pocket calculator would be a good place for MS to start?

A philosophical rejoinder: If you leave the keys in your car and the person who steals it runs someone down, should you feel at all responsible?

RE: Hmmmmm, M$ more concerned with Security than $$$????...

I believe most people will pay for something if they consider it worth investing in. I have 6 PCs around the house for streaming music and videos. Microsoft OSs would have cost into four figures. That is not good value when I see my network as a single entity. So I`ve gone to Linux.

Conversely I`ve voluntarily donated money for (to name one example) DVD Decrypter (for ripping my DVDs to said network). It`s `free` to use - no one forces you to pay, but you do anyway because it`s damn good value.

There`s a lesson to be learnt there. Microsoft have to have enormous reserves to protect themselves as their business is so big, but they are in a position now where they are quite safe from either competition or huge recall costs (to give one example). It`s about time they at least loosened their stranglehold and considered the bigger picture.

Just my tuppence worth ;)

Wellingborough have some still, as do Rushen - got mine this morning :D

I`ve got a Palm M515 with GPS and this is no comparison. The speed of updating and quality of visuals rivals the in-car BMW system IMHO.

Worth every penny people - if you are still umming and arring get it now while there`s still some left!

RE: HELP NEEDED - some bad news

Sincere condolences Rik, to you and your family.

It comes to us all eventually. You, your dad and your family at least had the opportunity to say things to each other that many others deeply regret not being able to for the rest of their lives.

There`s not much comfort in that right now I am sure, but it is a great gift that will help you put the pain behind you quickly and remember all the good things about your dad and the times you had together.

Take courage,

Matthew and Emma

RE: Teacher suspended from school for supporting the BNP

There are all sorts of rights you don`t have when teaching, such as Clause 28 which prohibits the advocacy of homosexuality in school. Even if the child is emotionally disturbed by their sexuality and needs someone they trust to talk it through with, you are forced to promote heterosexual relationships and never ever homosexual ones.

That`s just for starters.

Ultimately, a teacher is in a job to teach. That`s a subject and how to change from being a children to a young adult. That covers moral, social, health issues amongst many others. All needing to be covered impartially to allow a child to develop the ability to think for themselves.

Open presentation of your own views has no place WHATSOEVER in a classroom where the children are not free to leave like you would be in a pub when someone starts a conversation you don`t like.

Views on topics like race hatred are too strong to be able to keep to yourself and therefore such people are not in a suitable position to teach.

Simple.

RE: People not paying for train tickets...

The problem with employing a `bad-ass` inspector for each train is that within a day or two no one will be doing it, hence no more fines, hence the inspector is being paid for doing nothing. And if his wages don`t comes from the fines, they come from an increase in your ticket.

You`re screwed every which way.

The most cost effective way for the companies to police it is exactly what you`ve seen - collect a windfall in fines every couple of months or so. It probably works out about the same in the end.

perfect strangers in a company that has £12,000 of tv`s as stock obviously doesn`t need the money as much as I do

Wow - that`s one way of looking at the world. A modicum of intelligence will tell you that the bank owns those items until they are sold, not a small store.

So now, because there is a market for this sort of thing, insurance premiums go up for all of us and the country`s thieving scum get a chance to `earn` a free living from those who work hard for what they have - whether that`s a lot or a little is irrelevant. It`s the fact that they have worked hard for it that counts.

Reminds me of the `punchline`:

Quote:
shoplifting is a victimless crime: like punching someone in the dark

It`s nice at least to see some people still look out for others as well as themselves in this world.

Moved from Bargains forum - would you buy a stolen plasma TV and if so, justify yourself...

I`ve received this email from a company we work with - thought you lot may like to know about it in case you get offered one.

RE: Web hosting/Domain name registration...

You could do worse than me!

http://www.coolwebsitedesigns.com/mainpages/rates.htm

Very special rates for forum members, naturally. ;)

I design and host sites for national and international organisations and individuals from very small to multinational and government organisations. I do everything from registration to ongoing maintenance and am happy to `train` you to do it yourself as and when you want to. The packages come with full control panels accessed via the web, email, choice of windows or linux servers etc.

If you are interested email me: nitram_wehttam[at]moc.liamtoh and I`ll give you some more realistic rates.

And even if you don`t I`ll put a vote in for 123reg - I also use them for UK domain registrations. They are dirt cheap and the email and phone support is excellent.

RE: Trading names, U.S/U.K...

The actual history to the wwf domain rights (if ANYONE`S remotely interested) is that yankee fruits (I agree - he may have a girl`s name, but give me Shirley Crabtree anyday)asked the panda huggers if they minded them using the abbreviation. Thee panda huggers replied in true moon-maiden fashion that they didn`t as long as they behaved themselves.

Of course they didn`t. They waived the abbreviation around for years until it became quite obvious that people were getting confused. Despite the legal precidents about first use and continuing rights the panda huggers won the name back easily. This left the yankee fruits without a brand as they couldn`t use the abbreviation on tv or the web so they were forced to chnge name altogether.

Says it all really.

Matt

BTW: I do bits of this for a living and I can back up previous answers. If you run a similar business and the business in question has run for longer than you you will likely lose any callenge for it. If however you have been in business longer or it`s a totally different business you have every right to the name PROVIDING it`s not a registered trademark or name. Can`t register coke.co.uk just because your business `happens` to be called the `coke shop`. Even if you are selling coal...

RE: Rio`s ban upheld!!!

:D :D GOOD GOOD GOOD GOOD GOOD GOOD :D :D

The system doesn`t buckle for once!

Face it - he is either:

a - a doorknob for `forgetting` to attend something so important. What the hell does he get paid that kind of money for? If he`s too thick to use a diary I`m damn sure he can afford a PA to do it for him.

b - a drug user who thought he could get away with it by not turning up.

Either way he is a role model for children (in this day and age often more so than the child`s parents) around the world and whether he likes it or not he has a responsibility to behave like a responsible law abiding adult at all times whether there`s a camera on him or not.

And it`s not my opinion, it`s just fact. So there. >:(

RE: Cheap DLP Projectors for home cinema

Why DLP? LCD is an outgoing (albeit very slowly) technology so is markedly cheaper all round. The only true downside is the chickenwire effect and the Panny AE500 has a widget which stops this. They are £1600 retail, www.komplett.co.uk have grey imports from the Netherlands for £1050 charges all included - you may get the wrong plug, but it`s easily changed. This is best if you have a progressive scan source (i.e. a home theatre pc or dvd player capable of it, but they aren`t cheap) otherwise they also do the AE300 (also uses the chicken wire widget and has a slot for direct viewing of SD cards) for £775.50 which is jsut as good for interlaced sources.

Bang for bucks, it`s LCD

You may want to know about this then.....

go to www.douwantit.com and sign up. Overstock.com use the service which links in with the thread.

They have you register and install a widget on your system tray. Now when you go to a foreign store which uses their service a popup, erm pops up whenever you go to a product page. Hit it and it will tell you in the original currency and yours what the base cost, vat, carriage and totals are plus delivery time form that country. Put the product in their shopping cart and pay.

Job done. And the prices at overstock are pretty damn good even with vat and carriage.

RE: Tickets on eBay

I stumped up the cash for Eddie Izzard tickets once - £80 for £25 face value.

I don`t often go to such things and knew no better then, but I have signed up on his website and they email the `members` with pre-released tickets 14 days before ticketmaster`s general release. Hey presto, no more ticket touts. And they are always the best seats too.

I`m sure others will do the same - worth checking out if you hear of something in advance of its general release.

RE: Marriage Proposal - HELP

I proposed in a restaurant too. Here`s my thoughts:

1. Book a room for the night in a nice hotel with a nice restaurant attached. Eat there - it`s only a few mintues then up to the room. ;)

2. Only dead romantic will do. So that`s no "come on love, you`re nowt special. Might as well marry me, you`ll do no better". I had a ring and a single red rose.

3. No cake, no joke ring, no flaming dessert from the kitchen. Nothing tacky. It is serious after all.

4. This is how I did it - get down on one knee, give her the rose, recite something prepared earlier (true feelings, short to the point and not schmoltsy enough to make her spew) about life together, what she means to you - important stuff to you etc., then give her the ring. EVERYONE in the restaurant will stop to watch you including staff and it`s electrifying, though incredibly frightening too. Be prepared for the claps and `arrrrhs` when she says yes. Job done.

5. Don`t get drunk and forget your words/fall over/be lavishly sick on her. ;)

6. Incidently - the room and the meal were free when the management found out what had happened the night before.

RE: HELP NEEDED - some bad news

Balls to sympathy, as some posts have tried to indicate a little more tactfully.

Your dad`s attitude makes all the difference. If you all go at this like a protracted funeral everyone will lose. He will waste the last months of his life and you will all look back on a year of sorrow. None of you want that.

I;ve lost two close relatives to cancer, one protracted (over 15 long long years) and one suddenly so I`ve been through this from both perspectives and I know which one I would choose.

Don`t brush it aside, acknowledge it and be philosophical. Be thankful for the time you all have left together and make the most of it.

Finally remember medicine is not a science, it`s an art (Oxford and Cambridge resisted getting medical schools for nearly 1000 years (in the 60s) because it`s not properly academic. They can guess, but they can`t say with any certainty what will happen - I personally know several people who have totally recovered from terminal cancers and have heard of many more so don`t lose hope.

RE: Mark & Lard - leaving Radio 1

Saw the Shirehorses at Keele Uni back in 2000 while I was there doing some purely incidental postgraduate stuff.

The lads (old enough to be my parents) are pure class. Always have knocked Moyles (it`s shocking/disgusting/littered with profanity therefore it must be funny) out of the water.

Sad news, but at least they can look back on a show with real pride.

Featuring: animal sanctuary, cheesy chart challenge, one man and his frog, shirehorses, the spice is right, true or false and of course my favourite, fat harry white.

RE: Company Car Choice - Opinions Welcome!

The stilo`s crap. I want to love it, I really do - I like Fiat`s generally, it looks quite good and is nice with the extras but it drives like a bath on wheels. No use having the toys and big engine if you get hammered at roundabouts because it can`t corner is it?

Audi has class and will earn respect even if you drive it slowly. Civic is a good solid engine, but not the hot looker it once was.

It`s the Audi for me - and I`d upgrade - worth every penny.

budget tv buying advice please

The last tv I bought was a 21` Ferguson about 5 years ago - I use a projector for movies, so have not kept up with what`s what.

I want to spend £3-400 on a widescreen 28` or above. Sound is unimportant, picture quality is paramount. Not a snob so unbadged are fine too.

Anyone have any advice? Is £3-400 too little? Is another £100 money much better spent?

Thanks in advance folks.

RE: Yamaha DVXS60 DVD Home Theatre System £149

They are both here now, thought some of the people above might be interested in a review.....

Main unit is very heavy, study and solid. Finish is excellent and oozes quality. Connectivity is very good, though I would like to see 3 scarts rather than two. However with other options to use this isn`t going to be a problem. Picture quality is not good enough to rival a decent £200-250 player, but is strong enough to be respectable with blacks and whites clearly defined.

The speakers, contrary to the review snippet given above are weighty for their size and metal housed. They are very sturdy and small enough to be hidden in the corners of the room keeping the missus happy. Treble is clearly defined and the speakers are perfectly matched, with dialogue and action flowing well around the room. The sub is adequate for an all-in-one system but not worthy of real action movies. It is the cheapest part of the system and I would be disappointed with it had I spent the rrp on it.

Everything comes with the system - cables, ariels, remote, batteries, speaker mounts etc but the cable is bell wire and makes the whole thing sound like it`s underwater - upgrading it makes all the difference. The only real issue I have is that for an rrp of £450 ish the speaker terminals on the speakers and unit are spring clips not binding posts so there`s a limit to the cable you can use with it.

All in all, for £450 this is overpriced as it needs another £50 spending on decent cable, is region 2 only and could use a meatier sub (£80 Richer Sounds?) but for £150 this is a real bargain when compared tot he dross seen in Argos for the same money.
