RE: Colin Mcrae: DIRT

FINALLY got it downloaded today (have been without BB for weeks and was taking forever to download fhanks to all my torrents).

Love the buggy (Corr series??), but the evo & scooby handling is really poor, they just don`t seem to drift when breaking.

RE: Cancelled sky broadband - router not collected - what should I do?

Thanks guys. Thought it best to run it by someone else first. I`m moving out on Wednesday and wanted a wireless router for the new place so was gonna use the Sky one, but as it`s a little bit of a grey issue I think I`ll just go for an ISP that gives a free wirelss router instead

Cancelled sky broadband - router not collected - what should I do?

Hi all,

Back in January I signed up for Sky broadband but due to poor performance I cancelled it during the trial period (28/1) and wen`t back to my existing supplier (1/2).

When I cancelled, I was told that someone would be round to collect the router, but over 3 months have passed and no-one has been to collect it.

Is there a certain time-frame whereby the router now becomes my property, or do I simply have to keep it until Sky finally get their backsides in gear?

I`ve checked the T&Cs but there`s nothing there. I seem to remember reading somewhere that they have a "window" in which to collect equipment, but can`t remember where it was for the life of me!

I hope someone can help

RE: Forza 2 demo online today!

Well I`ve given it a good play and quite like it. Especially like the Zonda and Ferrari in the top class - so easy to handle.

Now dare I try it with the assists off?

RE: Firefly Complete Series (4 disc) - £10.99

Its great! Its one of those "must have" DVDs. Just a shame that Fox messed around with the air dates and order otherwise it might not have been cancelled so soon - there was so many storylines left for them to explore.

I`m going to my second Serenity/Firefly convention in 6 weeks time - the cast are such a laugh in person.

How do i go about creating a website with forums/messageboards?

One of my friends has asked me to try and find some info on how to create a website.

I know a little bit about HTML coding but one thing that he has asked specifically for is the option to have a forum on the site.

I did tell him about the "MSNgroups" pages which can easily have messageboards incorporated into them (I`m a member of an XBox clan with an MSNgroup), but he wants to register a particular domain and doesn`t want the MSN logos all over the place.

before I start hunting around the net, I thought I`d get some other people advice as someone on here is bound to know some details on site design, hosting, and forum creation tools.

Hope someone here can help

RE: Best Broadband deal?

I`ve been with NTL/Virgin for about 4 or 5 years and have never had any major problems. Started on their mid package which was 1MB at the time, then when they boosted the speeds dropped to the base pack (which had been upgraded to 1 MB), and since then have moved back up to the mid pack 4MB service.

In all that time, I think I`ve had a grand total of about 18-24 hours where I`ve had a fault on the linie, but they`ve always been fixed pretty speedily so if you are in a cabled area, I`d defnitely go for the cable option.

If you`re going dial-up, don`t believe the speeds they quote in the adverts - I fell for this by switching to Sky earlier this year and cancelled after just 6 days due to complete failure to connect in the evenings every day!

I`m about to move to a non-cabled area and on another thread somewhere on here I asked for info on broadband deals - the one that was reccommended to me was AOL so they might be worth a try.

Hope this helps

EDIT: Just found the thread that I started re non-cable broadband: http://www.dvd.reviewer.co.uk/forums/thread.asp?Forum=113&Thread=648132

RE: ENTOURAGE - ITV2 SUNDAY NIGHTS - OFFICIAL THREAD......

ah, just wanted to check I hadn`t missed it on TV. Can`t say I`m in a huge hurry for season 3 and I`m already watching enough US TV via the "usual places"

RE: Got a free SKY+ box last night, want one?

phone sky and ask fro a "freesat" card. they`ll charge you £20 for it but it`ll get you all the free-to-air channels, although E4 is a pay channel under Sky T&Cs if I remember rightly.

Help with merging 2 3gp files? (2nd question VOB to Divx?)

I`ve just converted some DVD footage to VOB files and then converted them to 3gp so I can watch them back on my phone. Annoyingly, DVD Shrink has converted them into two separate VOB files.

Now that they are in 3gp format, is there any free software out there that can merge the two files together?

Separate question - can anyone reccommend some free and EASY software out there that`ll convert VOBs to Divx?

Hope someone out there can help

RE: Microsoft confirms Xbox 360 Elite

I reckon that the Core 360 will be phased out and that the premium will drop to around the £209 mark (much like the original RRP of the core), and that the elite will slot in at the existing premium price point of £279.

The reason I say this is that now that the early production bugs have been ironed out (although not entirely), economies of scale mean that M$ have probably cut their loss-per-console figures.

I already have a premium sytem (on my 3rd since launch - the current one has been with me nearly a year now touchwood!) and I`m in no rush to get this new system. Yes HDMI is a bonus, but typically my HD ready TV only has component and DVI, not HDMI, so no point in me getting one yet.

Plus, it doesn`t look great in black - suppose thats another reason to buy a custom faceplate!

RE: Be Honest - best Broadband?

can someone please confirm that Virgin are increasing there speeds and prices? I`ve not had a letter yet about this.

Typically I`m moving out in about a months time and will not be in a cabled area, but at least i can get the parents sorted out with decent broadband before I leave.

I`m currently on the 4MB £25 a month option

EDIT - just found the press release http://pressoffice.virginmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=205406&p=irol-newsArticle&ID=974156&highlight

well pre-broadband I was with AOL, but as AOL is now part of TalkTalk and the amount of problems I know people have had with them I had more or less written them off!

Reccomend me a new ISP (moving to non-cabled area)

Hi guys and gals,

I`m shortly moving out of home (at last!) to a new flat but unfortunately its in a non-cabled part of town so I won`t be able to take my NTL/Virgin account with me.

Typically, the area I`ll be moving to will only get a max speed of 3.5MB (already checked the BT checker). Just wondered if anyone could reccommend me a good ISP.

The only thing I really need is someone that isn`t too strict on the monthly allowance as I download a fair bit of tv from the states.

Hope someone can help,

(Apologies if this is the wrong forum mods)

Same here Wedge - are you D&C?

Nope - Hampshire

RE: Police - obscene images....I know I did the right thing but....

what Julian said - I`m a civilian Police employee and any "indecent image" investigations do take alot of time to process.

The incident will probably be dealt with by someone in CID, but the hard drives will be interrogated by a specialist department (for us they are known as the "High Tech Crime Unit"), but due to the sheer amount of computer based crime that goes on these days there are inevitable delays.

No doubt the Police will be in touch with you to find out more about the circumstances of how you came into possession of the computer. You`ve definitely done the right thing - I just hope that they follow up on this and catch the bloke.

RE: Help required re secure network

thanks for the info guys. Will give the new IP / DHCP / WPA options a try in the next few days when my azureus downloads are complete

Help required re secure network

Hope someone here can help me,

I`ve been using a wireless network for about 18 months now but when my mate set it up, he couldn`t configure it so that it was secured. Now I don`t know a huge amount about wireless netowrking so I let it be.

I`m using a linksys WRT54G (v3.0) and the PC adpator is some sort of Belkin USB thing. I know its a fairly old router - bought it second hand of my mate when he upgraded to a 125G rated router.

Anyhow, I switched over to Sky broadband from NTL (aka Virgin). They setup the system as a secure network, but the download speed was extremely poor so i ditched Sky and reverted back to NTL.

I went into the router settings on the linksys and found the page where you can set up a secure network. As the Sky one had been setup via WEP encryption I thought I`d do the same with the linksys and sure enough I managed to get the network secured, and got everything sorted on the PC and two laptops so that they could access my network.

However, after a while I noticed that download speeds were severely redcued. If I was downloading torrents, I could hardly browse the web at all. In fact if I was on the PC and my sis was on her laptop, the net would slow to a crawl. Should this happen with a secure network - does securing/encrypting the connection really slow it down that much?

As a result, I`ve had to revert back to having an unsecure network. Can anyone tell me what I`m doing wrong?

The only other info I can really give from memory is that the key I was using was 8 alphanumeric characters long (think that means its 32 bit??) - I`m pretty sure it was a WEP key as opposed to WPA. All the computers are running XP SP2 (PC running pro - laptops running home).

Sicne reverting to an unsecured network I have updated the router firmware (4.20.8). The security options I have available are WPA Personal, WPA enterprise, WPA2 personal, WPA2 Enterprise, Radius, & WEP.

Can anyone suggest anything to make my network secure AND reliable?

RE: Heroes - Episode One online

Its a damn good series. Episode 1 certainly got me thinking, but it was episode 2 when I got hooked. I couldn`t wait for it to come back after the Christmas break.

I got one of my colleagues hooked on it when I leant her the first 11 episodes - now every tuesday before going into work she has to setup her computer to get the next episode, just like me!

I couldn`t believe how many actors/actresses were in it from other shows that I loved (won`t mention who as I don`t think they start filtering in until a couple of eps in and don`t want to spoil it)

For those that don`t know it has been confirmed that season 1 will run for 22 episodes. MUST buy the DVD when it is released!!!

RE: Poundland SD\MMC card readers.

they had tons of the SD/MMC readers in the fareham branch today (bought myself a blue one)

RE: See Speak & Surf

two ways to get around the menus. First thing, make sure you phone the number that they don`t promote, 0800 0512595 - saves you a fortune when they keep you on hold (info taken from www.saynoto0870.com). Worked for me when I phoned to cancel last week.

To defeat the menus, don`t press anything - the computer will think your using a non-touchtone phone and will put you though to an advisor. They might have to transfer you but at least you get to speak to someone quickly.

hope this helps.

RE: See Speak & Surf

warning - I signed up to receive sky broadband and had it installed on the 24th Jan. I had no end of problems with no connection between the hours of 5 and 8 in the evenings.

Needles to say, I ditched it after just 6 days and have gone back to NTL.

RE: whats this about a halo 3 beta free with some game?

the free beta test is being shipped with "specially marked packs" of the new Crackdown game for the 360. Went in to Game eariler today and was told that they think that only the first batch of discs released will be guaranteed to have the beta included, but he may just have been trying to con me into pre-ordering it.

The demo for crackdown is being released on the 360 marketplace sometime tomorrow for anyone interested. I`m not gonna pre-order unless the demo is to my liking.

RE: Sky Broadband Connect

i`ll let you know - I`m joining Sky BB Max on wednesday

RE: SMART car for two pure question..

no problems Paris. Give me a shout if you want any more info.

RE: SMART car for two pure question..

OP - can I suggest that you check out the following sites:

SmartManiacs
TheSmartClub

(in particular check out the forums - prefer the maniacs site but each to their own)

I owned a 52 plate Smart City Coupe (what is now known as the fortwo) from new, but then traded it in for a 54 plate roadster coupe.

In answer to your suggestion, the transmission works thus. From the neutral posititon, knock the gearstick left. Then, when you want to change gear you simply knock the gear stick towards the dash to go up a gear, or pull it back towards the handbrake to go down a gear. To select reverse, pull the stick back across to neutral, and then pull it back towards the handbrake.

If the model you`re looking at has a button on the left-hand side of the gearstick, it means that it also has a fully automatic mode (not all fortwos have this as its an optional extra on all but the "passion" models I believe).

Its a great little motor, and if you`re buying it as a "boys toy" as you put it then you won`t regret it. there are so many ways to personalise them, whether its performance or just cosmetics.

Check out smartmaniacs and find out where your local meet is and people there should be able to give you an honest opinion of the car before buying it and tell you of any faults (check the turbo as older models had problems - think `03s are OK but don`t quote me), but everyone will tell you how much fun they are.

If you do go ahead and get one, keep the last Sunday of September free - thats when we hold the London to Brighton rally!

Do be warned though - the price of the current fortwos (known to owners as either mark VIIs or Gen 2s) may drop in the coming months as the hambach factory where they are built has just been re-tooled and the first Gen 3 versions have rolled off the line (see pic here). Mainland Europe gets them in March/April, but we have to wait `til around September, although they are supposed to be at the current prices.
