RE: Philips 28PW6006 & Colour Distortion

Well he agreed to take the set away twice already - the thing is, as anyone who has to deal with Mastercare will know, they can`t guarantee times to turn up. Despite repeated requests that they come after 2pm they have failed to do this and they have ignored all my attempts at explaining the problem and also failed to acknowledge that anyone else is suffering in the same way - hence I`ve only ever been there when they have come back.

They have done nothing to the set at all. They put it on `soak test` and I don`t know what that involves apart from when I get it back I have to retune my channels as they`ve retuned them to the transmitter in Mansfield. Analogue reception of all channels except BBC1 is almost always nearly OK - BBC1 is `reddish` and always has been - the other day the set displayed an extremely red picture for a split second then went `normal` as it was turned on.

It seems you can`t connect anything to the SCART sockets without the set having these patches of colour come and go - what use is a TV you can connect nothing to? The problem is intermittent and even the `redness` of BBC1 doesn`t go away when nothing is connected except the aerial. It seems to me that whenever there is a reasonably strong signal to the set via SCART or aerial, the tube starts going potty and gives these horrible results.

I`ve told Mastercare and Currys explicitly what I have connected and how it is connected and how none of this can be duplicated when the equipment is connected to another set in the same configuration (or different ones for that matter) and that the only common component when the problem is there is the set itself.

I just hope other will heed this as advice when considering purchasing either Philips or from Currys (DSG).

There are plenty of threads describing this problem with Philips sets on this and other sites if you go looking - Currys and Mastercare also don`t fare too well in that respect either.

RE: Problems with the 32PW6515??

Well, I can definitely concur with Harry on these points;

a) unbeatable`s customer care and service is 1st class! (well done!)

http://www.unbeatable.co.uk

b) there must be a bad batch of philips sets and I have one!

RE: Philips 28PW6006 & Colour Distortion

Well, it`s kinda slung together, but here it is.

http://www.winactive.freeserve.co.uk/tvhassle/

I could take more of these pictures almost every day. The problem comes and goes, sometimes for minutes, sometimes for hours, sometimes turning the set off clears it, sometimes it doesn`t.

The examples shown are not the worst instances, sometimes the patches are really bad, sometimes they are really faint - sometimes they`re big and sometimes small.

BBC1 seems to have a reddish hue more often than not and last night when I turned the set into standby, the picture seemed to shrink rather than go off and I saw red, green and blue patches in the centre of the screen for a moment then they disappeared.

Perhaps a more knowledgeable person could tell me why that might happen?

Oh yes, Mastercare`s engineer has adjusted and stored the colour and contrast settings - I haven`t touched them since. They have also said there is nothing in the room which could be causing magnetic interference as they brought 2 people to redeliver the set the last time it came back.

I`ve tried different SCART leads, re-tuning RF outs and re-positioning all the components - the STB and DVD have been replaced with different models. They all work fine on my Mitsubishi set and that occupied exactly the same position in the room with all the components connected and there was no problem....but then I tried all that before even calling Mastercare out in the first place!

They finally had the cheek to suggest I pay an independent TV engineer to come and verify the fault - Currys said it was "my word against Mastercare`s" that the fault even existed.

HEY DSG, I WANT MY MONEY BACK!!!!!

(Compensation and an apology wouldn`t go amiss either.)

RE: 28PW6006 Vs 28PW6515

Don`t buy a 28PW6006 - I have a 21" NICAM Mitsubishi and it is perfect. (Except it`s not WS) It is really (not) funny to read harry`s comments about the Philips because I think they are spot on. The picture quality on the Philips ranges from very good to awful (they are very fussy with virtually everything you throw at them) my DVD and STB both needed setting-up to get a halfway decent picture but the tubes are poor. Mine is suffering from Colour Distortion and you may want to read about the hassle I am having with Currys to get the thing taken away. Two months ago I wanted a replacement, but now I am adamant that it cannot be given house room and I will never shop with DSG Retail ever again.

Can`t fault unbeatable.co.uk for customer service. I bought a Cyberhome AD-L528 from there and it was a lemon. They took it back and gave a full refund. (Are you reading DSG?) I will purchase a new television from them if they have the best price when I decide on the model I want.

RE: Philips 28PW6006 & Colour Distortion

Well, it`s 3 months to the day and I`ve finally reached the point where;

a) Currys Customer Care refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem
because
b) Mastercare`s experts cannot find the fault
c) the store where I purchased it won`t touch it with a bargepole because the people at a) are involved
d) the Credit Company are / have been giving the matter their URGENT attention (since March 7th - I have had nothing and can expect nothing for at least 60 days while they look into it with a), b) and c)

I have had to ARGUE with customer CARE (who it would seem 50% of don`t care) to who`s responsibility it is to find the fault. This is unacceptable service, so I would like to say;

Don`t buy a Philips television (or any kind of television or product) from Currys (or any other branch of DSG Retail - The Link, Dixons, PC World) cos when it goes wrong - they don`t want to know!

I will post links to digital photos of the fault in the next message.

RE: Dansai DVD 852 Player - CDRW Problem

my dansai wont read cd-rw at all

what was the firmware of the one that did?

does anyone have a flash walkthrough for this player?

RE: Ai menu in german

Its the Cyberhome.

Its a German player and it does the same with the R2 2001 - A Space Odyssey DVD - which you should have if you are a Kubrick fan. :)

I personally think this is one of the many problems which spoils the Cyberhome and I now own a Dansai - someone design out its only flaw - that naff tesco screen whe you turn it on! :)

RE: Philips 24PW6005@ 24 UPDATE

Hi Jon

There is a disturbing trend developing here. I would pursue Currys.

An engineer came to my house on Friday and adjusted the contrast setting on my TV claiming it would alleviate the problems as there is also some `dome-ing`.

It`s effectiveness.............DIDDLY SQUAT, NADA, ZIP!

The engineer is coming back next Friday - and if I`m home from work, I`m going to stand over him with a big stick. The engineer works for Mastercare (now they had a bad name a few years ago - can anyone tell me if they have got better - I`d be willing to bet not on that evidence).

As said, the TV is on a credit agreement - they either fix it or GE Capital will own a 28" widescreen I am sure they will not want.

Do you pursue them? Is your enjoyment of the equipment spoilt by the problem? If it isn`t...why are you posting here? DON`T LET CURRYS SELL YOU RUBBISH.

Regards (and the best of British)

RE: Philips 24PW6005@ 24

Fortunately I only bought the set in September (or October) and I have the stick of not having finished paying for it on Interest Free Credit.

Why not use a printout of the forum to add weight to your case that this is obviously a quality problem from Phillips and they (as the retailer) are liable - even if the product is out of warranty with the manufacturer.

Sale of Goods Act - fit for purpose for a reasonable amount of time - I think 14 months is reasonable for a £500 TV!

Hopefully they`ll do the right thing anyway.

Good luck

RE: Buying my first WIDESCREEN TV - any recommendations!!??

hi hulk

most widescreen tvs will have an auto or manual picture aspect selection.

this means set to auto, 4:3 broadcasts will appear in 4:3 with black bands to l and r of picture, any other format will be picked up as the signal is received so widescreen will appear full screen when present.

when in manual mode you can set the aspect to any size you like a 4:3 picture will stretch horizontally to fill the screen (this looks rubbish though) better use zoom to fill screen although obviously this will clip top and bottom edges of screen (no good for footy obviously) most stuff is broadcast in w/s now though. check the tv can support at least 4:3, 14:9, 14:9 zoom, 16:9 and 16:9 zoom and you can auto or toggle manually easily. This will ensure you get the best of your non - anamorphic titles, but they will just have black bands top and bottom in `normal` widescreen mode (16:9), like you`re used to on your 4:3 tv, except they won`t be as big as they are on a 4:3 screen.

most tvs will support NTSC via PAL60, just make sure your VCR and DVD support NTSC playback and you should be fine.

RE: ADL528 - Forced PAL 50?

don`t bother with the cyberhome, get a dansai

it has a NTSC/PAL button on the remote which can be switched on the fly.

the cyberhome is bad when converting NTSC to PAL, tested this with `Nighmare Before Xmas` R1, jerky horrible playback (but then the player was poor generally), the dansai jerks slightly when default set-up, just hit that button and hey presto, smooth as a baby`s bum... :)

differences between NTSC/PAL

29.997/25 fps (player/tv)
50/60 Hz (tv)
575(?)/625 lines (tv)

most NTSC playback systems use a PAL60 output

if it`s the telly - it could be tough, i have the newer 28PW6006 (i`ll stop there though..........)

my old tv had the blue tinged b/w you describe that is definitely PAL60 on a PAL50 tv, but fortunately that had a PAL60 option, it is a mitsubishi ct21astx (best tube i`ve ever seen on a tv, full stop. period.)

i still have that mitsi - pity it`s only a 21" 4:3.............

RE: The Dansai 852 - My Review

hi mico man

spot on review

try adjusting picture type in menu to hi-res from auto to improve picture quality - this worked for me - i have a 28" screen and definition/quality is no problem

agree needed to turn down dansai volume to playback mp3 cleanly (medium setting 8 is fine) plays 128k and 192k super - don`t think i use/have any other bitrates, most players don`t do more than 8 chars and some don`t support folders for mp3 - trust me, this player is good compared to some - get a PC if you`re an mp3 buff.... :)

there is slight picture interference when putting through VCR - i think this is more due to sensitive VCRs than a fault of the player, but yes it does disappear when DVD is off - however straight to tv is super with supplied SCART although tv does not pick up aspect changes automatically from my player (even though menu is set to tv type 16:9 ws), although it seems my tv could be at fault.........(see other posts)

my 7 year-old daughter loves the `ping`, it`s just like a microwave......one man`s meat is another man`s poison :)

more annoying is the `tesco` screen - someone come up with a picture flash firmware hack.....pls

RE: Philips 28PW6006 & Colour Distortion

hi brett

it seems the more i read in this forum the more i know the answer to this question - this must be a batch of faulty tubes or something - mine is the same when watching BBC1 it seems to be predominantly reddish in hue and then i get blotches of colour on screen green to the left and blue to the right - thought this was due to an itv digital STB but i think it`s the tv

time to go back to currys.............

RE: Philips 24PW6005@ 24

hi jon

i have the 28PW6006 and i get exactly the same problem but it occurs intermittently even during viewing programmes or during STB (set-top box)menus. this is so bad now it is highly annoying - it is becoming a pain and i would appreciate any feedback you give.

i have itv digital STB and i have had the original Nokia 8850 box replaced with a Phillips DTX 6732 but the problem has persisted. it was suggested to me that the STBs give off a higher lever of EM radiation when displaying text/game functions than just viewing channels - changing the box seems to suggest that the boxes are not at fault.

personally i think the phillips tube is not shielded properly or there is a fault with the RGB/SCART inputs. how far is the STB from the tube? (i assume you have positioned the STB under the tv - like most people do)

turning the tv back to standby and then on again sometimes works as most tubes auto-degauss when powered up.

RE: Subtitles on/off Dansai 852

can`t say mine has done this - i did have a cyberhome that did this exact same thing (along with many other faults) same disks that fouled the cyberhome don`t affect the dansai that replaced it.

what version of the dansai do you have (can be found from menu) and what titles are affected?

RE: cyberhome

hi herbert

i got one of these (ad-l528) players and i honestly have to say it was not very impressive, the unit was noisy and vibrated, the picture wasn`t centred and had artefacts, it wouldn`t read discs easily, the multi-region didn`t play all RCE disks (i.e. Toy Story 2), the VCD playback was poor, lots of sync probs on a few DVD/VCDs, the mp3 player chopped 2 secs off, the macrovision can`t be turned off.....need i go on?

i returned it and bought the dansai dvd 852 from tescos for 99.49 and it is a superior machine, plays DVD/VCD/cheap CD-Rs/mp3s superbly, quiet, works like a charm - none of the hassles i experienced with the cyberhome (unless i got a `lemon`). only minor problems i do have it that the load screen has a horrible `tesco` message on it (which you have to look at while playing audio CDs) and it doesn`t automatically `kick` the picture format on my tv - you know when you have a widescreen title and it stays 4:3 until you select the correct ratio on your tv. i have recommended the dansai to some friends and they are of the same opinion - for under £100 this player kicks!
