Page 1 of Problems with the 32PW6515??
Hardware Forum
Thought I would start a new thread...
I switched from the Faulty Panasonic 32DK1 to the 32PW6515 yesterday evening.
Mixed impressions so far.
e.g. Watching the Matrix DVD I can make out every single pore in Morpheus face - something I dont think I could do with my very old Mitshubishi or the new Panny. BUT the subtitles seem to have a minor shadow effect as does the bits of the main picture e.g. Neo`s face sometime has a minor shadow round the edges. I have only tested with the SVideo socket at present to will see what happens with an RGB Scart connection.
Watching OnDigital thru the RGB Scart socket also gives mixed results. On most modern stuff e.g. Corrie last night and the Footy match the picture seems to be out of focus slightly - I think this is how the picture may have looked on my 7 yr old Mitshubishi. But as I have been using the Panny for the past week perhaps my eyes have got used the sharper picture of the Panny.
Watchin an old rerun of the Good Life using OnDigital was really bad. The picture was really fuzzy and blocky around the edges of the characters etc. It reminded me of watching a very poor quality VCD!
Cartoon Network seemed OK.
I dunno - what do you guys think? Is my telly OK or does it need to go back. I definitely feel that the picture is considerably poorer in most instanced than the Panny 32DK1. Its just a shame that the SVideo and Scart2 are buggered on the Panny - otherwise I would love to keep it (and they have no more in stock).
I am using the same basic SCART cables etc that I have with my old Mitsh and the Panny. The Svideo cable is a reasonable one - paid around £25 for it. OnDigital Box is set to RGB.
If the tv has that many negatives so early, I personally couldn`t put up with it. If there`s something that bothers you, it really is hard to ignore it, believe me.
It`s a pity there are no more panny`s in stock, as it sound like you prefered it a lot more. Is there no more stock due?
You could always swap it for a 6006....
good luck anyway

RE: Problems with the 32PW6515??
Going by the description above, it doesn`t sound like there`s much wrong with it TBH (have you adjusted sharpness/NR etc?) and the concrete way of testing a TV is to use the RGB output of a DVD player. The Philips 6515 range has had its share of problems, but trust me, if you had one of the bad ones there wouldn`t be any doubt in your mind. The VCD-like reproduction you mentioned is almost certainly down to the digital feed (not the set) and some channels use more compression than others. The 6515 is very `honest` with RGB signals, so it will show up deficiencies in source quality (and conversely shine that bit more with good stuff). No other set in the same price-range can match it for convergence and lack of bleed/ghosting. So don`t exchange yours if it`s one of the `good apples`!.
I bought a Philips 32PW6515 about a month ago and was initially very impressed when compared to my old 28" Hitachi. However, I did notice some white and black blocking in the centre 1/3 of the screen during lighting changes and fast action. Last night I watched Blade and the final act of the film (where blade is killing the baddies before he faces La Magra) the strobing effects made the film almost unwatchable because of the blocking they were creating.
Anyway, I phoned my supplier this morning (unbeatable.co.uk), explained the problem and that there had apparently been a bad batch recently, and they are sending out a replacement tomorrow!!! My faith in electrical wholesalers has been restored. Hopefully this new set will be from a better batch and free from defects (wishful thinking maybe?) only time will tell.
I played with the Sharpness setting a few days ago and when i turned it right Down it did improve the pciture somewhat. The picture is still out of focus on some Ondigital channels. I also noticed that when someone is wearing say a black jacket or dress on screeen the blank looks patchy - dark purple in places and it again reminds you of watching a VCD as opposed to a DVD.
Switching on subtitles on a DVD also gives a minor shadow effect on white text. This is with the sharpness turned right down, if I set it back to the default Mid setting the shadow effect is really bad. This was with both RGB Scart and SVideo cables.
I will try and switch the OnDigital to Composite and see if it makes any difference.
The engineer is coming out tomorrow and I just hope he can do something with the system menu to improve the picture. If not I hope he agrees with us that the picture is naff so I can get a refund. I will then have to decide between the following:
Phlips 32PW6006 (cheap and not flat but apparently problem free)
JVC 32WFT1 - top magazine review
Tosh 32Z17B - well rated by owners on various forums
I really dont want to go thru another bout of testing and rejecting so I am really tempted to settle for the 6006 and sod the Flat Screen.

Well, I can definitely concur with Harry on these points;
a) unbeatable`s customer care and service is 1st class! (well done!)

b) there must be a bad batch of philips sets and I have one!

Well.....no, the new TV turned up....and it was the same, decided to go for a Sony instead.
Oh...watch out if you return something, you will be charged for a new set and won`t get a refund until the old set makes it back to their warehouse. I`ve just spent a weekend £300 over my overdraft with no money and nursing £££ of bank charges because they didn`t tell me this.
