Dansai DVD 852 Player - CDRW Problem

PGS32 (Harmless) posted this on Thursday, 14th March 2002, 13:16

I have been experiencing problems when I try to play CDRW disks in the above DVD. Some times it will read the disk, notably when it contains CD Audio information, sometimes it won`t, usually when it contains mp3 when it contains or MPEG 1 files.

Has anybody ha a similar experience or offer any advice?

Yes, I made a VCD with a RW today and found it had trouble playing it.

I recommend you give the Dansai some time to warm up. Play some other DVD/VCDs and then try the RW again, it usually plays then.

My other DVD player , the Mico was the same.

Had a somewhat similar problem with a Dansai. Often would not load a VCD or SVCD on a CDR/W, or if it did the picture was full of faults for the first few minutes. Using a cleaning disk cleared the fault until the next session when the same thing happened.
It either locks-up needing a power-off reset to extract the disc, or reports `No disc`, or else reports L:OA:D but won`t play and also locks-up.

However if the machine had been in use for fifteen minutes or so with say a DVD ( or other `pressed` disc) the same CDR/W would then play perfectly including menu selection etc. Whenever the power was removed the situation returned to `square one`, but if left on standby with the remote it would load the said disc without any difficulty.
The problem seemed to be the initial search of the disc to load it, - the noisy bit while hunting - and I suspected the `quick erasure` of the CDR/W might have left residual data on the disc at a critical point since it did not happen with all discs. However `full erasure` did not make any difference, and the disc behaved faultlessly in other machines.
I have now exchanged the Dansai and the new machine does not have this fault but I notice the new one has a different firmware version number, is that significant I wonder.
I have also found a Decca 2001 to exhibit a very similar behaviour. This has a standard DVD ROM loader and of different manufacture from the Dansai ( although everything else seems the same apart from the Firmware ) and so the loader itself is probably not the cause.
The powersupply is not particulaly well regulated but seems to supply slightly over rather than under the nominal voltages and these don`t wander with time. So, does the problem lie with the fimware or the ESS chipset employed in these machines ? If so why are they temperature dependent ?
Have others encountered a similar pattern ? Anyone have any ideas as to the cause ?

Certainly should read CDR/W since it says so on the box !
The two I have had were firmware V25JO1103 and V25JO1116. Both of these have read CDR/W but the first one always needed to `warm-up` for 15-30 mins before it would read them reliably; I have yet to find out if the cause of this is hardware or software related. I would not regard this as `normal`, particularly since my current one starts up ok from cold.
When running, the type or make of disc does not seem to matter nor did it affect the need for warm_up already mentioned.
Hope this helps

I have bought a Dansai DVD 1010. I copied some mpeg files to a cd-rw and tried to see if it will work on the player. After putting in the disk in I was led to a menu that had two columns that said folder and foulder 0 i keep on pressing play but nothing happened.

Can someone tell me how to play these mpeg files. thank you.

Well, I tried changing the brand of CD-RW from Princo to LG and it was still very dodgy, Mp3 would sometimes `garble` the first track, VCD was more pixellated, audio usually OK. Warm-up didn`t seem to apply, it did this all the time. I put this down to CD-RW brands, but then I tried the same discs in another 852 and they were OK.

It also locked up on Harry Potter DVD and AI DVD which again played without incident on another 852 and on my PC. (Toshiba SD-M1502/Power DVD 3.0/GeForce 4).

I took it back to Tesco and they gave me a refund.

It was always OK on CD-R (anything) and VCD/SVCD better than any other player I`ve seen and now I need to replace it with something as good feature-wise.
