£18k benefit cheat avoids jail

BENEFIT cheat Kerry Powell has avoided jail - despite illegally claiming nearly £18,000 in three years.
The 38-year-old, of Seedfield Road, Blurton, claimed income support, housing and council tax benefit from 1994.
The claims were at first legitimate as she was a single parent with dependant children and unemployed.
But she failed to notify the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and Stoke-on-Trent City Council when her circumstances changed.
Prosecutor Amy Jacobs told Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court yesterday Powell`s illegal claims came to light when the DWP carried out an investigation into security staff working in the Potteries.
Powell obtained a door supervisor licence in December 2004 and, a year later, started working for Revelation Security. She earned £10 an hour and averaged between £100 and 200 a week, the court heard.
A search of her home led to evidence that she lived with her husband.
When interviewed in March last year she said she did not disclose the changes in her circumstances because she was in financial difficulties.
She was overpaid £17,978.40 over about three years.
Powell, who had no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to four charges of dishonestly failing to notify a change in her circumstances in relation to her benefit claims.
Stuart Muldoon, defending, said Powell only pleaded guilty on the day of her trial as she could not accept what she had done was dishonest.
"She received her door supervisor licence as a result of a course provided by the job centre. They assisted in her obtaining part-time work. She disclosed that.
"She then changed employment and was often working more than 16 hours a week. She accepts she should have disclosed it."
Mr Muldoon said Powell had not yet started repaying the money as he advised her to await the outcome of yesterday`s sentence.
He said that Powell was highly regarded by former work colleagues and police officers who she often assisted in relation to town centre disorder.
He said Powell`s husband was unreliable and did not always stay with her and there were ongoing issues in the relationship.
Judge Robert Trevor-Jones gave Powell an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, with 250 hours unpaid work and ordered her to pay £700 costs.
He told her: "The initial claims were not at all fraudulent or dishonest. However, the time came when your circumstances did change. You obtained employment and you began to co-habit and then married Mr Powell. The length of time when either one or both applied was three years.
"I am quite satisfied you knew full well you should have notified these changes at an earlier stage and you eventually acknowledged that yourself."

benefit fraud.. steel £16385 pay it back .......£3.75 a WEEK

saw this in the local paper

Single mother pleads guilty to benefit fraud

SINGLE mother-of-three Anne Maughan received a suspended prison sentence after pleading guilty to benefit fraud.
The 35-year-old, of Broadfield Road, Goldenhill, admitted failing to notify a change in her circumstances when claiming income support between August 2003 and August 2007. In that time she was overpaid £16,385.03.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard yesterday Maughan, who has no previous convictions, failed to tell the Department for Works and Pensions (DWP) she had capital in excess of the prescribed limits.
Iain Speed, representing the DWP, said Maughan had accounts with Britannia Building Society in which there was more than £36,000.
He said: "She was interviewed under caution in 2007. She said the money in the accounts belonged to her uncle who lived in Ireland and he used the money to buy houses and then horses."
The court heard the DWP accepted the cash belonged to her uncle.
Mr Speed said Maughan had started to repay the money at a rate of £3.75 a week.
Richard Littler, defending, said: "This is not the normal benefit fraud case.
"She was always entitled to income support. She did not disclose monies in her account that belonged to someone else.
"Those monies were always to be repaid to that individual. The only benefit she would gain would be the interest on that cash."
Judge Granville Styler accepted it was not the normal type of benefit fraud. He handed Maughan a five-month prison term, suspended for two years, with a residence requirement.

hello i had a e2save -02 cash back deal and it ended at the end of January

bill in feb.
well it never came like it normally does so gave them a ring,
to ask for it ,
no prob i will just send another i waited
and rung again and again and again x12
no matter how much i rang and explained how important it was that i got the
last bill still never came last call yesterday and was told it would take 7- 10 days
but its over the e2save time limit to send now so lost out,
i made sure that the last bill was zero as it was end of contract,
but i wish and do advise that if you over spend on the last bill then they have no
choice to send a last bill to you

when i comes to claim the exclusions were amazing,
every way they can get out with paying out they would,

RE: Noisy Neighbours!

hello quick question ....
do your next door neighbours work in the week?
if so is it not possible to book a few days off in the week and well party till 6am,
even if it means put your music on full and go in a hotel over night.
it could back fire and not bother them and next time they party they might say
well we did not complain about you,
but they might just take a hint,

RE: Effing Paypal

>:(
i`m having same problem with ebay/paypal at the moment >:(
i sold a phone for £60
buying said phone was faulty so wanted to return no problem i sent payment for her to return it, just waiting for phone now.........BUT
because she filed a claim, the payment she paid was put on hold .. no problem just wait for phone agree with claim i get phone back she gets her money.....BUT
END OF LAST WEEK I BROUGHT SOMETHING ON EBAY PAID FOR IT WITH PAY PAL AND NOT ONLY DID THEY TAKE THE £12 PAYMENT THEY ALSO TOOK £57.81
WHY....... I WAS TOLD BECAUSE SHE CLAIMED A REFUND THE MONEY SHE PAID SHOWS A MINUS IN MY ACCOUNT .SO WHEN I PAID £12 THEY TOOK £69.81 £12 TO COVER PAYMENT £57.81 TO BRING ACCOUNT TO ZERO,
when i complained and yes i complained i was told nothing they can do until claim sorted out as balance shows zero, and they said i SHOULD then get my money back but the idiot on the phone could not see my problem and could not see their was one or understand or explain why money was taken from my card without authorisation >:(

RE: wireless burglar alarm

thanks loads for the replies, we got a electrician in the family so no probs getting it fitted
for free apart from, i hate asking people in the family for favour`s they do things for free
be happy if took some sort of payment just the way we are, nephew fitted the new central
heating for us , new boiler/ rads/ everything we just paid for parts, did it for free no probs
we do things for people and never expect out back but we don`t like to just ask and expect it done for nothing, and if you offer it seems to annoy,
,

wireless burglar alarm

not long ago moved house and we need a alarm, not because high crime no
different here than anywhere else but would feel better when on holiday etc
and nobody in,
looking at alarms and see that there is a lot of wireless ones
but i was a bit concerned about the reliability of these if no consent power
so i was wondering how good are these,
i cannot see these been sold if not reliable but as anybody got one fitted
and what do you think,
thanks :/

RE: Any HGV drivers out there?

i work for the co-op and they have drivers that just past the test, i was out from driving for 4 years but had no problem gettting on with a class 2,
we have got the collage in at the moment doing N V Q 2 and if you only have class 2 you can go on a course and do the class 1 for FREE
look into this with your local job centre you used to have to be on dole for 6 months at one time before you could get the free test but now they do it for anyone who wants to , if that info is wrong forgive me but i was talking to the girl who was doing the NVQ2 and she was adamant you get it for free no matter what,

RE: Did you get the new JD Freebie?

Brubby if you send me your address i`ll send you mine,
if you want the poker dice you can have that as well,
but not to sell on ebay only if you want them your self, please be honest. :¦

RE: Kate McCann to be named a suspect.

yesterday on the news they said we are now stopping in Portugal to clear our names,
2am news both are leaving today to fly home?
she`s in one paper with her story him in another ?
i wonder if they are getting paid for the stories and if so why cash in twice?
and if a fee is paid will the fee`s be put into the Maddie fund?
what ever the outcome i`m glad its not me,
if they are innocent they must wonder what the hell is going on, if guilty they must
be thinking are we going to be found out........

RE: Make up a lie about something that happened to you ??? ( go on !? You really want to ?? )

i wasn`t up the local fields today with the wife at 1.30pm and i didn`t look around in the middle of
cough cough and see 4 blokes trying to look at what we were doing,
and we didn`t get the hell out of there at 300 miles an hour :o :) :) :) :)
