Philips DVDR family - no play DVDR DL

Has anyone came up with a fix for the Philips DVDR family of DVD recorders to play DVD+R DL disks?

I burnt films onto Reitek DVD+R DL disks and then onto very expensive Verbarum DVD+R DL disks and found the following:

Philips DVDR 70/ 75 and 77 machines will play none of them. Just reports a disk error.

Cheap Black Diamond, 100 quid Philips player, 3 year old Panasonic player will play DL disk perfectly.

So why can`t the Philips DVDR family. (Already updated to the latest version of s/w: 6.3).

I wrote to and also rang the Philips technical helpline asking if this is a software or hardware issue. And if it is software, would they be releasing a new s/w to fix it.

They hadn`t got a clue what I was talking about. "Most retail disks are DL and can be played" is all they said over and over. And they when I asked if they had anybody that was actually technical, they said that they could not follow up any further on my inquiry !! $%^&* !!

After paying quite a bit of money on the recorder I though that it would at least play all formats of disks...........

RE: Are DSP options important, do you use them ?

The DSP options are mostly just toys to fiddle with and tell your mates how many you have !! When I first got my Yamaha DSP I would constantly change between the options but could never decide which actually sounds best. -They do all sound different, but different is not necessarily better, so now I just stick to the basics.
It is up to yourself but if you are a perfectionist like myself you`ll end up missing the film by flicking options for the best effect.........

RE: What player do you have, so I can work out the which players have sold the most.

Wharfedale 750S Have nothing to complain about it bar it won`t play 2001

RE: Wharfedale deathtrap

You could have taken the `aul hose out and extinguised the flames in a naturally sterilising way............(!!!!!)

RE: Fox 5 Star Special Editions

I have alot of SE discs and in reality all I want is the best possible Audio and Visual copy of the film possible- most of the extra discs That I have, I only stuck in the player to see if they work.

RE: How Many DVD`s Have YOU got???

I agree with Duncan, the is nothing more annoying than a bunch of little s***s running a film that you`ve bothered to go see. Nice one though, get `em f@@ked out !!
I have a pretty decent Hi Fi/ Home cinema(Audio Lab/ Yamaha/ Marantz/ Mordaunt Short) set up but I simply don`t have the room space to do it justice, but either way, I don`t think that you can beat the big screen..........
I have about 50 DVD`s, mostly go to the flicks.......I find it`s hard sitting down to watch a DVD with out someone calling or phoning!!!

RE: region 1 vs region 2

http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/

Try this web site also for direct comaparisons, but as Dicanio said, region 1 usually has the options/quality. Region 2 users really get the s*** end of the stick..............

RE: Hairspray - can you get it?

Try Boots Chemist, but only do it to a film that you don`t like as it leaves an awful sticky mess on it.............!!?? :-)

RE: Looking for Firmware upgrade for Wharfedale 750S

The guy said that there are upgrades available for certain Wharfedale models but didn`t go into details as he could not help me.....
Did you get any more info?
Cheers Shaun!

RE: minato g1 firmwire upgrade?

No problem FrankieJ!! Your MIB problem may be an indication that your player dosen`t quite like that particular disc and becomes unstable resulting in it hanging/freezing. A firmware upgrade(if available) could fix this problem, but if this only happens every now and again, I wouldn`t worry about it. -Firstly make sure that it is not a dodgy disc by checking it out in other peoples players.

Some discs are more demanding to play than others, and some have known problems/bugs when played in certain players. Check out :
http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk
They have a list of problem discs with known problems.
Enjoy!

Looking for Firmware upgrade for Wharfedale 750S

I have a Whafedale 750S and I can not play 2001- it hangs/locks up at the "intermission" scene. Does anyone know of the latest upgrade, or have it? Can I get a copy please?
- NESN as on the Tesco`s website can not help as they will only assist with player bought in the UK....

RE: minato g1 firmwire upgrade?

Firmware is basically code or a program that is permantly programmed into a chip in your DVD player. This chip holds the players firmware which is the software that runs and controls how your DVD player works/decodes the DVD information/ the DVD menu system, etc.
-An analogy would be like the operating system on a PC, as newer applications come out it may be necessary to update/upgrade the operating system to handle these new applications or fix bugs that the new applications are showing. In this case the applications are DVD movies and as newer films are coming out with more complex menus, extra`s etc., some players can`t hack it and need a firmware upgrade which was written to handle the new features or fix known bugs.
-Sorry if I`m waffling on a bit !!!
Usually you would get these upgrades on a CD which you play in your DVD player, the new firmware that is being read, is written over the old version in the player.
I am trying to find a firmware upgrade for my Wharfedale 750S as it can`t play 2001 all the way through-it hangs and/or crashes half way through the film. So unless you have a particular problem with certain DVD`s don`t worry about an upgrade as you don`t need it. - If it`s not broke, don`t fix it !!

RE: R1 Planet Of The Apes

Do you have the TV System setting in your players setup menu set to "Auto" ?
My Whafedale was a bit jumpy with R1 discs as it came set as "PAL" but setting it to "Auto" fixed this.
-either that or you have a dodgy disc.

RE: Wharfedale 750S Firmware upgrades???

Cheers Shaun, I`d appreciate that. They didn`t actually tell me if there was an upgrade for the 750S because as soon as they heard I was in Dublin they said that they couldn`t help.
From some of the posted mails there must be a later firmware for the 750S than the one I have as some people`s players play 2001 fine and other don`t..?!

RE: Previously Deleted Scenes/ Restored Footage

Some scenes are deleted against the wishes of the director, the finished film boils down to time restraunts, the target audience, etc. and the producer has the final say, hence the release of some "Director Cuts" of movies- i.e. the way the director originally wanted the film but for some reason could not leave them in/or was not allowed. - So, yes the scenes should be restored, but as already said it is a personal choice which you prefer....... Nearly all the special editions/director cuts of films that I have seen are much better than the cimema versions..

RE: Where can I get firmware upgrade?

And I`ve been searching for a firmware upgrade for my Wharfedale 750S...And NESN as advertised on the Tesco`s web site will only help if the player was bought in the UK, so they are no good to me !! Does anyone have the latest upgrade on disc or mail??

RE: Wharfedale 750S Firmware upgrades???

Hey Shaun,

I rang them and they were really nice, but they can not help me with an upgrade as I am in Dublin and they can only give upgrades for players bought in the UK....bummer.
Do you have or know of anyone with the latest upgrade disc? Could get a copy?
Cheers....

RE: Traffic-Wharfedale 750 Problem

I`m trying to get my hands on the upgrade disc for the Wharfedale 750S, does anybody have a copy which they could sent me, or if small file, e-mail it to me?

My 750S hangs at the intermission scene during 2001:a space odssy.

RE: Region 1 Query Thanks

Check out

for comparisons of R1 and R2 discs....

RE: hidden features

I have the R1 version, but check out

www.easteregg.com

You might find something.

RE: Wharfedale 750S Firmware upgrades???

Yes siree, there seem`s to be a problem....I have a 750S and it won`t play the newly release version of 2001:a space odssy. Seems like some LG players have the same problem with this disc- see below posted mail on 2001.....

I`ve mailed Wharfedale but had no reply yet, but it`s early days yet......

RE: Problem with 2001:a space odyssy - The Stanley Kubrick Collection

Jammy Bast`ad !! Is your machine one of the later models? It might have newer firmware than mine...... strange though as mine is less than a year old.. Enjoy the film as it is a masterpiece.

Wharfedale 750S Firmware upgrades???

Does anyone know if there are any Firmware/software upgrades for the Wharfedale 750S and if so where would I get them?
Cheers.....

RE: Region 1 Query Thanks

You are very welcome !

RE: Is Region 1 Worthwhile?

I`ve been oner in NY, the DVD prices are practically the same, if not dearer in some cases. As for quality, you won`t notices the difference(well I don`t anyway using a Wharfedale 750S). In fact as far as I know US disc should be better quality(on US equipment) as they use 30 fps and Europe use 24 fps.
But apart from that, the Region 1 versions quite often offer more extras, uncut and also DTS 5.1 in some cases. - so can be better all around. And can be released months before Europe get them.

E.g. Some discs over here are only Dolby 2.0 but the region 1 equiv. are a full Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1, and more R1 discs have DD and DTS on the same edition. -So basically do your homework before buying.

RE: Problem with 2001:a space odyssy - The Stanley Kubrick Collection

Cheers Kileer, it is obviously a compatablity problem. I exchanged the disc for another and the same problems occur.- especially at the "Intermission" as you have found also.

Problem with 2001:a space odyssy - The Stanley Kubrick Collection

I have a Wharfedale 750S and just bought 2001:a space odyssy - the new remastered version labeled as Stanley Kubrick Collection. It causes the player to lock up completely either while loading the disc or during the menus. The odd time you can get the film to play but after a certain amount of time the picture pixilates and the machine hangs with the result of you having to switch the machine off and then on again to get the dics out. -This disc plays fine in a friends Sony player as well as PC DVD ROM. Has anyone else encountered this problem?? (It`s "p***ing" me off as I was delighted when they finally released it, and then can`t watch it....)

RE: problem with terminator 2 ultimate edition

As Fanny Magnet has suggested, -it sounds as if your disk is only fit to be used as a beer coaster. Either that or return it to a shop as it is most definitely shagged. Boths disks play fine for me....
