Page 1 of Is Region 1 Worthwhile?
DVDs & Films Forum
Hi, I`m off to America in 2 weeks and was wondering about the picture quality on R1 DVDs. Would it be worth my while stocking up or is the
picture quality inferior due to less lines required for the US?
I have the Goodmans GDVD124. Thanks.
With a Goodman, you won`t be able to tell. Not that you can anyway even with better equpiment, but if you have top gear like a projector and a DVD player with progressive scan, R1 will look better then R2. Nothing to do with lines by then, it`s how the picture is display.
RE: Is Region 1 Worthwhile?
HI been there too, but to be honest you wont get many movies cheaper over there than what you can get on import over here.
there are the odd few bargain bins to look out fof but thats about it.
Its not just the price but the fact that R1 releases come out earlier.Ive just
recieved planet of the apes which you wont see on r2 for a few weeks.

RE: Is Region 1 Worthwhile?
I`ve been oner in NY, the DVD prices are practically the same, if not dearer in some cases. As for quality, you won`t notices the difference(well I don`t anyway using a Wharfedale 750S). In fact as far as I know US disc should be better quality(on US equipment) as they use 30 fps and Europe use 24 fps.
But apart from that, the Region 1 versions quite often offer more extras, uncut and also DTS 5.1 in some cases. - so can be better all around. And can be released months before Europe get them.
E.g. Some discs over here are only Dolby 2.0 but the region 1 equiv. are a full Dolby 5.1 or DTS 5.1, and more R1 discs have DD and DTS on the same edition. -So basically do your homework before buying.
RE: Is Region 1 Worthwhile?
I have just upgraded my player and I think it`s worthwhile doing so.
I`m not that interested in getting films early (or the extras) but it`s just nice to get them at a reasonable price.
I know play 247 have most r2 films for about £14.99 but you can get them a lot cheaper from abroad and usually you only have to wait 4-5 days.
I wouldn`t pay over £12 now for a film unless it was a special edition etc.
The savings soon mount up.
Having a multi-region player just gives you more options.
