True Detective is an upcoming American television anthology drama series on HBO created and written by Nic Pizzolatto and directed by Cary Fukunaga. The series stars Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Dunn, Michelle Monaghan, Alexandra Daddario and Elizabeth Reaser, and utilizes multiple timelines to trace two detectives' hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana across seventeen years. The series will premiere on January 12, 2014 and consist of eight episodes.

The story will be entirely concluded by the end of the first season, so any future seasons will revolve around an entirely different set of characters and story.

I'd love to see more of this sort of thing, rather than endless shows that just get spun out until they are no longer profitable. From HBO, it's almost guaranteed to be excellent, especially with this cast.

Starts in the US on January 12th.
Starts in the UK on Sky Atlantic in February.

Yeah that's definitely the way forward, as too many shows are ludicrous beyond the first season.  The Killing, Homeland are ones that spring to mind (even though I enjoy them, if they had the convictions to deal with everything then they could have stayed as brilliance).

I'm in the one season camp too. Awake was a great one season wonder!

And this sort of thing also would mean if a show is really awful I can stop watching it after the first. :)

One exception to this is American Horror Story, but technically each season is a complete new series.

First episode of brilliant! I can see why the project attracted so much talent.

The slow burn narrative gives way to the characters, who are absolutely fascinating thanks to the strong lead performances. It's about as far from your usual police procedural as you could imagine, and I can't wait to see more!

Michelle Monaghan, Alexandra Daddario and Elizabeth Reaser? I may give this a shot.

Starts on Saturday on Sky Atlantic.

5 episodes in and it's already one of the greatest things ever put on TV.

Ain't even hyperbole. Get it to the top of your viewing schedule!

I'm with Gareth. I have episode 5 to watch tonight but 4 episodes in and it's easily one of the best shows in years. It has me gripped from beginning to end and both leads are excellent, giving close to career best performances.
