Well the squad is out
England:
Hart, Green, Ruddy
Baines, Cahill, Cole, Johnson, Jones, Lescott, Terry
Barry, Downing, Gerrard, Lampard, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Parker, Walcott, Young,
Carroll, Defoe, Rooney, Welbeck
Standby: Butland, Jagielka, Henderson, Johnson, Sturridge
First thoughts are not enough centrebacks. Only taking 3 plus Phil Jones is asking for trouble, especially when Gary Cahill is currently injured.
Milner offers flexibility in central or wing roles, but especially given centreback position and the amount of players that can play on the wings, I would have taken at least Carrick (has played there quite a few times for Utd).
Baines I would only take if considering him for the left wing aswell (if assuming A Cole is still first choice). Lescott and Barry can both play left back if required.
Downing is a "natural" left winger, but personally think he offers so little flexibility and on the back of the season he`s had, I wouldn`t justify him a space.
Carroll, I agree with ahead of Crouch. Still week in strike force though, especially with Rooney out. Guessing that potentially either a 4-5-1 with Lampard/Gerrard in the hole or possibly one of the "wingers" in Young/Walcott etc are viewed as possible strike options.
Jagielka would be in the first team ahead of someone for the centreback issue already raised. Henderson is nowhere near ready and there should be others ahead on standby.
Gerrard isn`t capable of playing the 3 games in a week, which means that hopefully Hodgson will use him and Lampard in rotation rather than as a combination and makes sense, as with the options both should be in the team.
For the same reasons I agree in the Ferdinand decision to an extent. Not convinced he`d be able to play so many games in quick succession after the season. Happy with Terry, Cahill, Lescott (Jagielka on stand by) ahead of him.
Also all the fuss about Micah Richards, but he has either been injured or a sub for the whole second half of the season, so I can see why he was not considered.

Agree with most, not enough center backs or forwards and wellbeck and defoe (who i am a fan of) in front of the Norwich lad?? dont get that and with Rooney out for 2 games i think? dont know who will score goals as I wouldnt say any of them are natural finishers really....Terry and Lescott not good enough for me, i like baines, barry downing or lampard would not get into a squad of mine tbh and agree about jagielka who would be 1st choice for me, sturridge would have been in mine too but it is individually the weakest england squad iv seen ever for an international toury as i dont really rate any of the keepers particularly highly either

In fairness that could be thrown at some other teams also for being weaker than they have in the past.
I wouldn`t say England`s chances are any lower than in the past.
Got a feeling Spain won`t win, just because no one wins 3 tournaments in a row.
Think some decent teams will be going out in the group stages too, apart from Group A, I think the others are all pretty strong.
I tell you who`s team is surprisingly very strong nowadays though is Belgium. "If" they had qualified I would be all over them as dark horses.
Mignolet
Kompany, Vermaelen, Vertonghen
Defour, Hazard, Fellaini, Dembele

Quote:Rio Ferdinand `gutted` at England Euro 2012 snub
Rio Ferdinand says he is "gutted" to have been left out of England`s 23-man squad for Euro 2012.
The Manchester United defender, 33, was the most high-profile omission from manager Roy Hodgson`s squad for the tournament in Ukraine & Poland.
"Absolutely loved playing for England. To say I`m gutted is an understatement of the highest order," Ferdinand wrote on social networking site Twitter.
Hodgson insists leaving Ferdinand out of his squad is a footballing decision.
Ferdinand`s omission avoids a potential conflict with John Terry, who is to stand trial in July over a charge he racially abused Ferdinand`s brother Anton. Terry denies the charge.
"I selected John Terry for footballing reasons & I left out Rio Ferdinand for footballing reasons," said Hodgson.
"I`ve spoken to both of them of course. I had to do that."
He added: "In the last couple of days I`ve spoken to both of them & explained to them why I`ve come to the decision."
"He [Rio] was obviously disappointed. I`d be surprised had he not been. He was very gracious & he wished myself & the team the very best of luck in the tournament."
Chelsea centre-back Terry was stripped of the captaincy for a second time by the Football Association in February over allegations that he racially abused Anton Ferdinand in a Premier League match against QPR.
The FA`s decision led to Fabio Capello resigning as England boss & the recent appointment of Hodgson.
"I realised that when I selected him [Terry] there would be people who would raise eyebrows but that`s the decision that I`ve made, that`s the decision I shall live with."
Ferdinand has been hampered by back problems in recent years but made 30 Premier League appearances this season, the most times he has featured in a campaign since 2007-08.But his club manager Sir Alex Ferguson said recently: "You play something like a game every four days. Rio Ferdinand couldn`t do that."
Ferdinand, who has never played in a European Championship & won the first of 81 caps in 1997, was named England captain in February 2010 after Terry was removed from the role for the first time following allegations about his private life.
But the United defender suffered a knee ligament injury in England`s first training session in South Africa ahead of the 2010 World Cup & missed the tournament.
Ferdinand`s subsequent unavailability saw Capello pass the captaincy back to Terry in March last year & he made the last of his England appearances in the 2-2 draw with Switzerland in June 2011.
"I had a private conversation with Sir Alex [Ferguson] 10 days ago," said Hodgson. "I think Rio has done exceptionally well this year. He`s played a lot of matches through injury.
"He`s got himself on the field of play when many a player wouldn`t have done so.
"I`m also wary of that because I know there have been times in the season where Rio has played three matches in a week.
"I would be lying if that [the ability to play matches close together] was the major reason for not selecting him.
"It was purely on other footballing reasons.
"I admire Rio Ferdinand as a player. I think he`s a fine footballer & I respect him, but I had to pick a squad with defenders I wanted to take to the Euros." From Here

Same old same old
At least Hodgson could have been brave in his selection as England are not expected to make in past the first round
Well seems like Roy has taken some quite frankly stupid decisions so far, 1st picking a keeper who has done nothing, nada, zero in relation to other keepers, bad enough?? well you would think so before the Ferdinand "original" carry on took place then he chooses another player who has done next to nothing and is a right back only i think?? madness....on the + side I hear Liverpool are touring eastern europe in the next month :)
Done nothing???? He took out another of our central defenders jaws!

I didn`t see the game - did anything happen to the guy who shoved Cahill into the keeper? I thought that looked terrible - and needlessly cynical.
Strange choice with Kelly - will we ever find out the truth with Ferdinand/Terry? Could/would they play together? And I thought Richards said `no`? Kelly will end up a pawn in all the politics. :(
Ste
We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..
He got booked, it didnt look that bad when he did it, obviously was, although I think that Cahill and the keeper were waiting for each other to take control of the ball and neither did and the forward pushed Cahill into him.
