The OLD Chestnut AGAIN!!!!

mbilko (Elite) posted this on Monday, 20th April 2009, 17:41

So once again the OF touted for a move to the premiership, what changes it this time (and makes it possibly more likely) is the introduction of a Premier League 2

I see from reports that they think the top 4 will vote against the proposed changes (not sure why) but they would need one more club to back them to veto the new proposals.

Also one chairman said he wanted the OF to pay £100m to gain entry, in this day and age I see that as a non starter (but maybe a starting point for negotiations)

Anyway its the only time I have given this type of story any credence so we will wait and see when these chairmen meet (i think) on thursday, as Im sure the smaller clubs will see £ signs from any association with the EPL whether it be EPL 1 or 2.

IMO sooner or later there will be a European "Super League" leaving the Prem without Man U/Chelsea/Pool/Gooners and maybe a couple of other teams. Maybe the OF will biff off and join them?

Could someone please
Remove these cutleries

Rangers and Celtic are Scottish teams and should stick with the SPL or whatever flavour we have up here mbilko. I would expand the SPL to 16 and remove the stupid split. As Mr Smee says Euro leagues will happen sooner rather than later and we should wait for that to happen. It`s probably the smaller EPL clubs behind this - their current plight leaves them scared of dropping out of the EPL and the financial difficulties that will entail. For many debts are rising and their financial models are failing. Turkeys don`t vote for Xmas so there has to be a financial motive behind the likes of Bolton`s move. We have 53,000 season ticket holders (Rangers must have 35-40,000) and we both have large travelling supports - they obviously know this. It would also attract sponsorship for EPL2 if we were part of their setup. Leave the clubs down south to it. Meltdown may be on the way for a few. ;)

Couldnt agree more Spooks, and as i said up until now i wouldnt even have given it house room, but this is scary in that i do think it may be possible. My worry is for the international scene more than anything, if the OF join a what would become a british league, i have no doubt a british national team would definitely be pushed for by some inside fifa.

The other post re Euro league, i dont see the top 4 ever leaving the EPL for the same reasons they will play second string teams in every other competition to keep the money they make from a top 4 finish.....

Yes you should

I`m not so sure
I, as a non travelling fan, would hate it so for those who like to go to as many matches as possible it would be a rediculous idea.
Even UEFA and the idiots who run it should realise that

This same cost issue would surely occur if you were allowed into the English leagues. The yearly price fr your fans to go to away games would increase quite a bit I would think (longer distances, higher ticket prices etc etc).
Would this not affect some or a lot of your fans? (in terms of affordability not necessarily desire before you start spouting that)

I think you are kind of right.
I think the EPL big wigs / club chairmen feel they can "expand the brand" so to speak and in doing so provide a better platform from which to strike uip negotiations and also reduce the blows should relegation from the "top flight" happen to them.

Irrelevant point really
Most games at most clubs sell out so you having a large travelling support is not an issue here. You won`t be entitled to any bigger ticket allocation than Stoke would be (for example) and if they sell all their tickets you can`t actually add to anything

It may be seen as an incentive, however, it isnt one that would be totally necessary in my view
I suspect that the only reason for this idea is that you guys up there have been hinting for ages that you need to get out of SPL as the league is stale, not competitive and you think you should have something bigger

I hope you do
I dont believe we need two scottish clubs in our league
For one, i think for you to jump straight into the EPL 2 would be totally unfair on the restof the English clubs.
I believe if you wish to join the English FA you apply and start in the non league area like any other club have to and work your way up
I also believe that the EPL 2 may well be detrimental to the lower league teams, and including your two clubs just adds to that possibility.

I think you would find you would just have to become affiliated to the English FA and not the Scottish one.
It would not be a BRITISH league
You would join (and like the fact) the English league plain and simple

I agree Euro leagues ain`t happening any time soon.

Money on offer would have to be at ludicrous levels. Like I`ve said before, the top clubs in Italy and Spain do their own tv deals so get over £100million each before Champions League money comes into play.

Together with the loss of standing as there can only be a few top clubs challenging at the top, the TV deal would have to be at ludicrous levels.

Like Fowler said the fans travelling is also an issue that I believe would be too big to ignore.

Also Fowler is spot on here

I can`t see anyone from 8th/9th downwards in the Premier League or in the Championship voting for Celtic and Rangers to come in either as they will be taking 2spots away from them.

In fact I don`t see Premier League 2 going through anytime soon. Personally I would probably follow it vaguely like I now do the Championship.

If the championship and league 1 and 2 clubs get a vote I`d be surprised if any of them would go for it. However, i;m not sure they get a say in what the EPL do
Presumably though the FA have to agree to the change ??

I still think if Celtic and Rangers want to join the English leagues then they should have the bottle to resign from the SFA and apply to enter the non league system as any other club would have to do and work their way up to their level in time.

Unfortunately, much as I`d be happy to see the back of either of them, the SPL is reliant on them.
The league would struggle to get any sponsorship or TV time without them.

Could they do that though, even if they wanted to?
The last time I checked, UEFA rules were such that if you have a "viable league" in your own country, you`re not allowed to join another one.
Swansea/Cardiff must get around this by pointing out the rest of the teams in their league systems are part-time???
The OF can`t do that, when the likes of Aberdeen are drawing against Bayern and beating Copenhagen at a canter! :D

Just leave the buggers where they are. Why would we want them in our League?

Fair point and a correct one I think

Either way though, if they can get round that rule then I still say they should start at the bottom and work their way up!!
