Page 1 of who to buy from?

lots of horror stories about techtronics in this forum...so where to buy from who DO provide a good after sales service? Please advise as I was/may buy from techtronics.

Here`s an idea. Buy from a "SHOP" ...... remember them??

Apparently its like a house with things in it and you pick up what you want and give them "money" in return. Sounds a bit dodgy to me.

Shops! I remember those.

You go into a building and start looking at the DVD players, which you immediately notice are significantly more expensive than you`ve seen online.

A salesman standing over by the washing machines notices your puzzled expression and strides over to join you. "Can I help you, sir?"

"I`m looking for a multi-region DVD player in the £200-£300 price range", you confidently reply.

The salesman whistles through his teeth as soon as "multi-region" is mentioned. "Multi-region players are illegal", he says. "We don`t sell dodgy gear like that in here. Besides, this player here" (points to a £400 Sony) "says it does PAL and NTSC, so you`ll be able to play American discs on it anyway."

"But..."

"At any rate", he interrupts, "there`s no need to buy anything other than British discs these days. There`s so much choice, and it`s such good value. Take a look at our DVD and video section - we have Terminator on special offer at £24.99."

You decide to change the subject, asking about RGB and SCART leads.

"Ah yes, RGB", he says. "Look at this Panasonic RV40 player." (He fumbles for the Standby button.) "RGB uses the colours Red, Green and Blue to give you a better quality picture. If you peer closely at the screen you can see it`s made up of little red, green and blue dots. Amazing technology."

"Don`t I need a SCART lead?"

"No, but if you`re buying a player from us you may as well buy a SCART lead as well. Only £19.95." He goes to get a small box from behind the counter, which you immediately notice has "SONY PLAYSTATION SCART LEAD" written on it.

"Right", he says, "that`ll be £419.94, plus five-year extended warranties at £199.98 for the DVD player and £11.98 for the SCART lead. Total price... £631.90. Do you want them in a bag?"

You make your excuses and leave.

Shops... wonderful places, aren`t they? Not dodgy in the slightest :-)

P.S. Yes, I know this example only applies to the high-street chains like Comet and Currys, but try finding a decent independent if you don`t live near a big city ;-)

If you`re buying a player, not just a mod, Richer Sounds are a great company to buy from. See my post from a week or so ago. You can order online from them, or from any of their shops (yes, those things, except their staff actually have a clue). Their website has the Aiwa 370 multi region in stock @ £199. Also they will price beat any genuine price in the UK, and their 5 year warranty for £30 takes some beating.

If you`re not daft then you will treat comet/dixons etc.. with the cynicism/contempt they deserve. Richer sounds or even Tescos are great price wise. Proper hi-fi shops are always up for a haggle (when I get me hands on them anyway) or they`ll bung in cable or scarts etc..

My point is that I`ve bought a few hi-fi/cinema things from "shops" recently and have had some bother with them, ending up in returning one item. If I`d bought them off the net I`d be well and truly stuffed judging by the techtronics saga etc..
