Got an iPhone and feel ripped off

So Apple has infected older phones and they run slow and shut down.

Guess this could be it's emissions scandal.

Not satisfied at the price of  it's products.....they had to milk it.

If what they did is to help customers, why not roll it out across all devices.

Merry Christmas!

This feels to me like the "Netflix tweet" scandal, something that should be obvious to anybody who understands technology. As a battery ages the performance goes down, so if you want to maintain battery life you have to slow down the current draw on it.

So either people moan about how their three year old iPhone lasts 1 day when it used to last 3, or most of them don't notice a performance slow down and keep using it longer than they otherwise would.

Either way people will moan Apple is deliberately trying to get them to upgrade, either by slowing the phone down or by making the battery hard to replace.

Mine got replaced last year because the battery was one of the dodgy ones, for free. And it actually benchmarks faster than the model should atm. :) So this is purely down to the quality of your battery and not any attempt to make you buy a new one, it's to keep your old one useful for longer.

But I'm not complaining that they are making official battery replacements cheaper! I'm all for that! That's the real scandal, the cost of replacing these components officially.

I think that's missing the point tbh Rob.
The point is that Apple have deliberately slowed down phones without telling users what they have done.  Sure, people often complain that batteries don't last as long as they used to - but they were still getting the same performance (albeit for a shorter time - and besides the general performance loss due to apps install and data etc.).  But a reset would restore it to its 'new' performance.  Apple decided they knew best and slowed devices down - instead of maybe allowing users the option of just enabling the power saver mode.
It seems they agree and have apologised and will now allow users to see the 'health' of the battery.
Great news that they've slashed replacement battery prices too.  Probably get it back by charging £200 for an extra 32GB of storage on iPhones.. :)

Ste

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

I dunno, you make a good point that Apple should have told people that's what they were doing, but I still think it is a fuss about nothing.

People have been saying for years that Apple deliberately slow down old phones with every iOS release, so this fits in with that belief, but Apple say they've only started doing this in the iOS update a year ago.

And the only thing they are going to do is let you see the quality of your battery, well apart from the replacement discount which is temporary.

The thing that irritates me is the lie that Apple are deliberately slowing down old phones to make you buy a new one, when they could easily just do what every other mobile company does and stop providing updates to the OS which would achieve the same thing much more effectively.

There are many reasons to dislike Apple, like how little tax they pay, how they don't make their products easy or cheap to service... I just don't think this is one of them.
