Can I connect two routers

Snaps (Elite) posted this on Tuesday, 10th October 2017, 12:37

I've got a new Sky 5ghz router which has a shorter range than the old 2.4ghz one.
Is it possible to connect the old 2.4 one to the new 5ghz in some way to extend the network in the house.
Sounds sensible to me but probably isn't.

You can turn one into a repeating bridge if the firmware supports it. They'll both also need to support the same wireless band, so 2.4GHz in this case.

Would need to turn DHCP off on one though (the second one).
Does the new one not do dual band?

Thanks for the replies.
I am now finally admitting defeat and running Ethernet cables round the house.
Well at least 3 more anyway, my PC is already cabled, one has to get one's priorities right.

Any does and don'ts? Only two sockets on the back of the Sky Q router so there will have to be some splitting done.

I'm going to this in the bungalow soon but with a hub in the loft feeding down to the 3 bedrooms. Am I right in thinking it'll be as easy as 1 cable to the hub which will split the connection between the 3 I'll have coming out?
I'm currently running a cable up the passage to the farthest bedroom but it looks quite messy.

Use flat cable, make sure it's gigabit, and even if you think you can run it under the middle of the carpet and not show, it'll show, run it around the edges.

Get white if it matches your skirting boards so you don't see it where it comes up.

If you are going to custom cut it yourself get a proper crimping tool set with a tester (they are so cheap these days).

This is a great video:

The 'hub' is a switch - don't forget you'll need power to it in the loft.
Other than that a cheap and cheerful TP-Link 4 or 8 port unmanaged switch will be absolutely fine.
Get a cable to the switch from the router and it'll take care of any devices you connect to it.

Make sure any hubs you get are gigabit!

Just need to order my shopping list, find my tack hammer and get some throat lozenges to compensate for the swearing that inevitably accompanies any DIY project.

Snaps - I have the new Sky router and like SJ suggested it’s dual band so you can broadcast a 2.4GHz signal and a 5GHz.

The range on 5GHz is terrible so unless the device is in the same room as the router I still use 2.4GHz.

I think the default is to broadcast one SSID, you need to go into the router admin page and set it to broadcast separate SSIDs.
I.e.
SKY12345_5GHZ
SKY12345
