Back up strategy

What's yours?

Now I'm slowly transferring stuff to the new PC I don't want to end up in the same fractured state as before where stuff is much the same as my desk
ie: Subject is the rough position and date is how deep on the pile.

Open to suggestions as to the best (least expensive)route.

My GBs of photos go to my Amazon backup storage that comes as part of Prime. Everything else important gets backed up to a Raspberry Pi NAS.

I image the c drive of laptop to one usb HD, and the desktop under the TV to another using easeus free backup tool,

each of those machines has photos copied to it, which are also copied to external hard drives.

photos are uploaded to irista (canon's currently free photo storage), and as much as I can onto drop box.

once a month I backup the month's photos to DVD-R

when I fill the memory card in a camera, that card now get's archived, and a new one put in camera.

I realise it's a largely manual task, but I copy photos from camera to the PC's and the USBs normally Sunday night while dinner is cooking :)

Ooooh! Now there's a thought.
'Honestly it's really essential that I buy one to keep all the family photos safe'
Negotiations with the management may commence shortly. Once I've Googled around a bit.

I may end up Amazon Priming as well though I missed out on their one day, 25 quid off a Fire stick deal. I'll probably wait till The Grand Tour is shown to see if they repeat it.

The thing I find about Amazon Prime is for any one part of it, it's just overpriced. But if you watch a couple of TV series on there (or have a family member who will take advantage of the free movies), and use the free next day delivery, and the unlimited photo storage, it becomes worth the money. Now they have Prime Music but I don't stream music so meh.

A Raspberry PI NAS won't cost you much, the trick is getting a USB HDD caddy that isn't totally rubbish. But get a cheap and nasty one, and you'll end up with one of those horrible S-Video plugs used as a power cable that will disconnect every time you cough.

This is what I got (to replace the awful one I had before that even replacing the connectors on didn't help):
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hornettek-X2-U3-USB3-0-enclosure-HT-3210U3/dp/B00CRC5L08/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1474708516&sr=1-1&keywords=Hornettek+usb&tag=myrev09-21

I got a used one from Amazon for £24.99, which looked brand new. Maybe add a uk.camelcamelcamel.com watch for that if you want to save £15.

Add a budget 1TB HDD (Toshiba is a decent make atm), and away you go! Plenty of guides on the internet for setting up a NAS on a Pi 3. Also as the Pi 3 comes with built in wireless, you don't have to worry about much more than where to hide it.

Under £100 for the lot, I think? You might be able to get a NAS for around that anyway, but you can usually do more with a Pi.

Mine is NAS for windows backups, but also a Time Capsule for my Macbook backups (that was fiddly to get working), a DLNA server and a bittorrent client. You need to be comfortable with Linux to take advantage of that tho.

Isn't that an interesting whooshing noise when things go over your head.
I've got a 1TB drive which I used to salvage a previous fatality. I just need to hoover it of anything relevant, which I haven't done as I didn't trust the old XP machine to do it safely.
The other thing is a WiFi card (cheap I know) which I didn't bother asking for when I bought the PC as I knew I was cabling it up.

A bit of studying and pricing when I've a bit more time to spare.
