Finally bought an SSD..

sj (Elite) posted this on Monday, 28th April 2014, 21:03

Well, as it says in the thread title, I finally bought an SSD for the laptop today.
I got the Samsung 540 EVO (500GB)...
As everyone who ever installs one says....  "Wow!".
Just everything about the PC (especially browsing funnily enough - assume getting things from HDD cache for webpages slowed things down more than I imagined) is so fast now.  Apps open almost instantly, boot time is superb and things like AV scans just fly through.  I can now copy to and from my NAS at 100MB/s+.  I just copied a local file from and to the same folder and it was writing at 400MB/s+.  Just ridiculous speeds.  Very, very happy with it!!
Performance score is 7.1.  Drive is 7.9.  The 7.1 is from the graphics card.

The only thing dropping my score is HDD speed as well. I'm 7.4 to 7.9 on everthing else

I swear in recent years Microsoft have deliberately ruined normal HDD performance, or at least made no effort to optimise their supposed smart system for prioritising read/writes.

Probably their entire dev team has been using SSDs for years and just no longer cared about all the people who can't afford one.

I want one for my laptop now, but 512s are still too pricey. :( But the 256 I put in my desktop, even though it's only used as my system and program files drive, made such a huge speed difference to everything.

Mine was similar.  I don't think they're absolute values though because installing this thing dropped the others..Quote:

I got this for less than £212 delivered.  It was over £250 at Amazon.  That was for the laptop kit which included the spacer but nicely, also included a USB3 - SATA cable for the quick transfer.  (was cheaper than they were selling the basic 540 EVO for..).  £20 cashback at Samsung for a week or so too.. (got from Scan with free del.)
