I bought a Samsung Mini 2 in th eSummer, it's ap retty cheap Android phone, got it on Orange PAYG.
anyway last SUnday I went out for a walk, took a couple fo photos, got home it started vibrating, I assumed that was it telling me it had auto transfeered new pics to dropbox, I had facebook messages etc, but it wasn't it just vibrated a few times, rebooted, vibrated a few times etc.
So, I phoned Orange, as I bought it from their website who told me to contact Samsung, who aren't open Sundays, so I rang emailed them, got a response Tuesday, that I shgould go to Geek Squad at Carphone warehouse.
so yesterday morning I took the phone there, the geeks squad guy said he'd hopefuly be able to fix it, may take afew hours depending on how easy it is to get teh right soiftware etc from Samunsg, how long it takes to dl, install etc, and said even then that may not fix it, and then he'd have to send it off.
Unfortuanetly as Kies is a p.o.s. and doesn't work with my phone I didn't havea backup, but luckily dropbox does photos.
Few hours later got a phonecall from the chap to say he'd fixed it. so went in there, picked it up, and he'd just installed the stock Samsung Gingerbread, not the Orange specific one, which aspart from a few niggles is fine, at least he got it working.
So I asked him what had happened, I got the feeling he didn't want to/couldn't commit, but was suggesting it was a Samsung update that messed it up, as he suggested whenever there's an update I should wait a week or 2, check on any fall out before updating!
He said that they're all as bad as each other, but each manufacturer is in such a rush t put out new versions etc, they hardly test, so wait for feedback from consumers, and shops!
I was talking about this at work, then a colleague pointed out that doesn't seem right, since as the article Rob posted a while ago, the manufacturers are generally a few versions behing what Android is available.
so I've turned off auto dl and install updates, and will manully do it now, just wondered what other ppl do?
Cheersd

RE: Samsung phone brick/update
twice in the last 18 months I have had to complete factory resets, on my S2, each time it seems to have been stuck on some sort of App upgrade...

My S3 updated itself the other day.. no problem.
The OH's S4 mini also had no problems updating..
The only issue was that there are additional security features which ask for permission to install - without actually explaining what they are. After a bit of Googling I see they're part of the Samsung Knox Security install.
I get fed up with tech companies expecting all their users to be tech experts.

Had an S2 for 18 months now. Seem to remember a problem with a major upgrade about 9 months ago which needed a reset but nothing since.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what `it` was.
Now, what I`m with isn`t it, and what`s `it` seems weird and scary
RE: Samsung phone brick/update
Mine have all been okay so far (touch wood). I updated my original Galaxy S from Froyo to Gingerbread using that horrible KIES software and something went slightly wrong, but thankfully I was able to do it again and it worked without issue. I went to 2.3.6 at a later date and that was also okay.
I just ditched my Galaxy S in favour of a Moto G running Jelly Bean (the Galaxy was soooo slow), but that's due to get KitKat in January so we'll see how it goes. I updated my Nexus to KitKat and that went smoothly enough. The newer iterations of Android appear to be much better/quicker than the old when it comes to updates.
