Virgin media broadband superhub VMDG480
Hi All,
We have been upgraded to 30M from 10M & therefore they have replaced our modem with the above, which is a combined modem & wireless router.
But, the wireless range is poor. Nearer the hub, we get 30M & starts to fall, the further you go.
It is sited in the same place as was the previous wireless router, and we never had any problems with it. It was used with an older VM modem, which apparently is not compatible with 30M broadband.
I wonder if anyone here had similar uses. Would a wireless extender solve my problem?
Has anyone managed to get an extender from VM to solve this problem?
Thank you

mines the same, the range is such an issue that they added a "modem mode" in one of the updates last year, which basically means you can change a setting on the hub, making it into a modem only, then you can use your own wireless router rather than have to deal with the truly abysmal range of the "superhub"

Hi Ogster,
Have you made any changes to fix the problem, if so what are they? Or is it still poor?
What is the better solution- connect separate router & use the hub as modem only or add an extender to the hub?
Thank you

if you still have your old router, & providing you had no issues with it`s signal etc, then i wouldnt bother with extenders/repeaters, just go into the routers settings & enable modem mode, that`ll disable 3 of the ethernet ports on the superhub, leaving it with one ethernet socket to act as the modem (just like the old modem/router setup)
i`m still deciding weather or not i`ll go down that rout, leaning more towards getting a pair of 1gbps homeplugs at the mo, mainly because they have come down quite a bit in price :)

I took delivery of a SuperHub on Friday and I`m still debating plugging the damn thing in after all the negative press I`ve heard. I have an excellent Netgear router currently running and switching to the Superhub will mean a hell of a lot of setting up again.

Don`t have a problem with mine since getting it, even though there was a power pack recall the other day but luckily mine was fine...

from what I read on cableforum, the ppl having problems, are generally ppl pushing it/trying to do loads of functions you should be able to do, but don`t work too well maxed out.
it seems if you just plug it in, and use a couple of computers it works ok.

Some of the functions on it are great but the wireless is known to be terrible - with a very poor range too. (Mark, is it also made by Netgear). Laptops do intermittently just drop the signal too.
Where possible (Android tablets and phones), I connect to the wireless signal of my Sonos which gives full strength all over the house whereas the `Super`hub can be one bar in the next room.

I have a Belkin router which has been brilliant apart when its knickers in a twist & requires reboot, it is at this stage that it is a pain as it does not reboot easily- the modem light will keep flashing, and I have to leave like this over night till it resets.
The VM tech support were very helpful, she remotely set the hub settings & she had also tried to set it as a modem only, but my router would not reset properly at this stage.
I think my only option is to have a new decent router or have an extender.
If I were to use an extender, would the bandwith drop or should I still expect 30M?
Which is the better of the 2 options router or extender/repeater for range & bandwith?
Thank you guys again for your inputs.
