Remote desktop software

r8sso (Elite) posted this on Wednesday, 7th December 2011, 10:31

Morning all

I`ve been thinking about this on/off for about 2 years now but after yesterday`s kafuffle with the folks I think it`s about time I sorted it out.

Basically I`d like to be able to take control of their laptop and do everything I could as if I was there in front of it.

Could anyone recommend some software for this?  Simple to setup would be nice as I`m not that savvy with networks/firewalls etc...

Cheers
Ross

Pretty sure the one I was using that was free last year was Teamviewer.

Dead easy as once it was installed on another computer I could access just through a web broswer (so could get on my computer at home anywhere).

Haven`t used it in ages, but it did the job I needed pretty good and was dead easy to set up.

Can you not get them to send you a Remote Assitance request? All either of you need is Windows XP or better. Vista/W7 work better with NAT firewalls though.

Another vote for Teamviewer.  With the amount of firewall setups and AV software etc. about now, the success of `simple` remote assistance was pretty much zero the last time I tried it (a couple of years back admittedly).  Apparently works fine through whatever it is where you sign in etc though (MSN?).

www.logmein.com you will need to install the application on their machine and add it to your list of computers (It`s all free for consumer users). You can access any of the computers in your list from anywhere (even a phone if you install the paid for app) as long as they are powered on.

Cheers for all the responses.

Logmein is the only one I`ve heard of before but I might give TeamViewer a go first as it seems popular. Does anyone know if I can expect to get any issues setting this up on the same wireless network?  i.e. if both laptops are connected to the same network and I get everything working can I expect problems if I then take my laptop home and try and do the same from a different network (firewall issues?)

no should be fine, we use teamvie in this office, 2 pcs using smae router, and on different networks in different offices.

the remote pc you`re supporting just downloads a little program, no install, which gives a unique id, as an admin, you run a different program, enter than id, and you connect to it. Only problem we found with it (and logmein) is that remote PCs we`re supporting, user generally isn`t a local admin, so you can`t install software remotely, or set up wireless keys, as that prompts local user to enter password, which stops session until they enter it :(

I`ve done exactly that before r8sso.
I still find it ridiculous that W7 Home Premium doesn`t have Remote Desktop.  Even though all the options for it are there, they don`t actually work. :(

It can be installed though. ;)

Someone has basically taken the appropriate files from the versions up and worked out its really rather easy to get it working.

One thing you`ll find is you need to patch things so when you log in you see what the other person sees, otherwise you`ll end up with your own terminal session looking at your own private desktop.

Probably using XP? That really wasn`t very good when it came to traversing NAT based networks, in fact Remote Desktop will suffer exactly the same issues unless you forward a port on the router to it.

Vista onwards has a much better system for Remote Assistance with regard to NAT, it seems to work very well even if both computers are behind it and neither have ports forwarded. PnP might have to be enabled on one of the routers though.

I would still give it a go first, before I did anything else.
