XP Defender Pro - help needed please...

Simon A (Mostly Harmless) posted this on Monday, 19th April 2010, 10:21

I`ve somehow picked this virus up this morning and can`t seem to find a way to remove it.

Nothing on the microsoft about it, spybot hasn`t removed it and I don`t really trust any of the things that come up when I google it (via firefox).

Internet Explorer won`t work at all.....can anyone help?

I would trust the AV software here:
http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

If you can download and install that then do a scan and hopefully you`ll be sorted. If you can`t there is also a link on their to the Rescue System which is a Linux based scanner you can boot up to via CDROM.

Thanks RJS, and that was me above by the way....I used the lost password thing and it must be an old account that I`d forgotten about!

It seems to have gone at the moment (touch wood) I did a spybot scan in safe mode and an update of the avast anti virus. Spybot didn`t seem to get rid of it in normal mode mode though so I am still a bit concerned.

I need to go out now but will have a look at that link later.

If anyone else has had this please let me know.

Thanks again.

Right, think I`ve cracked it using a fix from here (which also recommends the malware bytes scan afterwards)

Still not sure how I got it, the only thing I clicked was to allow a java update so I guess it must have been attached to that somehow.

Well apparently it is a clone of that Microsoft Internet Security virus but I didn`t know that this morning when I did a search on here for XP Defender Pro.

First virus I have had for about 6 years so I guess I`m pretty fortunate.
