XP SP3 problem

aja007 (Elite) posted this on Thursday, 8th May 2008, 13:52

Is anyone else having a problem installing SP3 for Windows XP?

It downloads but won`t install and this happens on both my laptop and PC.

Any suggestions???

In the honourable tradition of forum replies:

It works fine for me on several PCs. :)

I went to here
and downloaded the standaloneinstall. Be aware it`s over 300mb.

I download updates via offline update then apply them to PC`s at home & at work (so backwards they dont push any updates out via SMS, use ghost images >3 years old & expect the tech centre (not desktop) to apply updates by connecting each PC being worked on to the Microsoft site) from an external HDD.

If your problem is "Access is denied" then just follow the instructions on this page. Very simple and effective. After using it SP3 installed without problem.

The only message is "Installation Failed".

Just installed on my virtual machine running on my Mac without any probs. Will then attempt the install on my bootcamp partition, then if all`s OK it will get installed on my desktop PC.

But given that its basically just a collection of all the updates since SP2 was made in 2004 its not going to make that much of a diff.

SP3 is causing some AMD PC`s to continually reboot.

One fix in this instance is

Quote:
I have had this problem before sending an image from an Intel based PC to an AMD PC.

The fix is to boot up using the windows cd and enter the recovery console. From there type: disable intel_ppm

Reboot the PC and all wil lbe fine again

Even though I`m a stickler for not installing too much crap on my PC and keeping startup and msconfig as clean as possible, my PC`s running sloooooowly now. Can`t complain, it`s probably been about 3 years since I re-installed.. :o
Slipstreamed SP3 last week and am just waiting until I get a few hours spare to stick it on..

Guess I won`t install it then since with my PC I got a XP recovery CD, and you can`t get into the recovery console with that (how ironic ;) )

I guess I could borrow a XP Pro Dell OEM disc from work.

Cheers for the head`s up, that would have annoyed me!
