can I use the same copy of XP on my laptop as on my desktop???

retrogeezer (Elite) posted this on Monday, 8th May 2006, 20:45

Anyone know if it`s o.k to install the same copy of xp on my laptop as I have on my desktop??
It`s my copy so I don`t see why I should have to buy another?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry retrogeezer - 1 licence per machine is the rules

Be thankful you don`t find yourself stoned.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you've noticed.) You don't normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Unless of course cough cough you stumble upon a n keygen to get another license code not that it is legal or recommended by me. :/

Hmmm that might work as one way of getting a licence key. ;)

I`ve just had to re-install Windows on a new HDD so had to ring Microsoft for a new key.
Technically I don`t think your supposed to do this but as I could prove where the machine and the copy of XP came from and they were legit no objections were raised.

So I suppose you could install it on your laptop and spin them a similar yarn.

Well, thats where I`m slightly confused......I`ve lost 2 hard drives since i bought my copy of XP.

So, when I install it on a new hard drive, I just use the key that came with it and I`ve never had a problem??

Surely if your hard drive packs up you are perfectly entitled to install your own software on a new one without messing around having to ring for new keys.

Quite right as the first time I installed it it didn`t ask for a key but I did a second install over the top as some of the drivers didn`t seem to make it.
The suggestion from a friend who knows about these things was to make sure that the new disc being used was the same size as the old one then it wouldn`t flag up as needing a key as long as the rest of the spec on the machine was the same.

Have you tried installing it on the laptop and what happens if you do.
