is it legal to resell microsoft software

Can anybody clarify something for me please...

I have the full 4 disc version of Microsoft Office 2000 Premium which is no longer in use as our old computer is now completely knackered and we have a new laptop with all new software.

I`d listed the software on Ebay and have been told by a computer geek friend that it should be ok to register under the new owner`s name. I`ve since had somebody query this and now I`m a bit worried that it may be a problem for them to register it under their name. Will it still be under my name? I registered it about 4 or 5 years ago. I haven`t had any bids yet.

If anybody can advise, I would be very grateful.

Thanks :)

Melt :)

I think you will find that the software , after you registered it, will be licenced for your use only.
MS may allow any subsequent owner to apply/buy a licence for the package so try contacting them prior to any sale.
Should the next owner try to register the bells will start ringing so best be sure before hand.

Would be interesting to read the End User Licence Agreement (EULA). Isn`t there a bit of a fuss now over Half Life 2 (the EULA allegedly being illegal) because once it`s registered you can`t give/sell it? But they will transfer ownership for you (of YOUR item) for a fee. :o
Given that it`s Office 2000 (not XP and subs) where the product doesn`t need activating I think it would be OK myself..
I would think it all depends on the licence agreement wording. When you register your hoover/oven etc. it doesn`t mean you can`t sell it..

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

As far as I understand it, you can`t have it installed on more than one system at once (unless you`d bought a multi user license). So providing you un-install it (or in your case didn`t install it on the new system), then you`re free to sell it to someone else.

If you sold it, and still had it installed on another system, I think that`s when you`d be in breach of the license.

Mark. :)
