Just bought a GEForce 6600GT... Can someone do me a favour please.

Wad (Elite) posted this on Monday, 7th February 2005, 20:15

Just bought a GEForce 6600GT card, but I`ve been very underwhelmed by it so far.

PC spec is Athlon 2200+ with 512MB RAM. Previously I had a 64MB Radeon Pro in it, and got a score of about 7000 on 3D Mark 2001 (2nd Ed). With the new card I`m only getting 10500 - I expected way more.

I`ve not had a proper play yet, but Doom 3 is still suggesting 640x480. Half Life 2 seemed to glide nicely at 1024x768 but I haven`t tried it with AA on yet.

If there is anyone here with a similar spec that can do me a quick favour and try running 3D Mark 2001 please - interested to see some other scores for comparison.

Thanks
Wad.

(not got a similar card but it`s nice to see) Was gonna post something to get people to compare. Thought it was too geeky.. ;)

There are a lot of reasons why the card doesnt work as well as it should do. The biggest bottle neck is your processor, probably followed by the size and speed of your RAM. And maybe your mother board is lame.

The problem is its like dropping a ferrari engine into a metro. If your underlying base isnt great then youve not got a lot to build on.

For ref, i get 14,000ish on the 3dmark2001 with an Athlon 3000xp and 2 strips of 512mb RAM in a dual channel nforce3 mobo. And my GFX card is a GF4 ti4200 which is about 3 or 4 years old. Its a common mistake, but just dropping a kick arse GFX card into an old PC will just give you a slightly faster old PC.

Im going to upgrade soon to take advantage of all the new graphical bells and whistles but pounds per pixel, its still the card to beat.

(i put 17,000 in before but that was when i put a 9800 in it!)

3d Mark 01 = 11887
3d Mark 03 = 4674
3d Mark 05 = wont run

Doom 3 on my comp , it suggests running at 640x480 as well - even at this rez some bits of the game get a bit jerky

My motherboard is only AGP4x and 9700pro is AGP8x

What is the specs of your mb?

Anyone know of a site showing 3DMark2001 scores maybe in a table to show easier comparison? Surprised the ti4200 is so far ahead of the 5600. Basically the same PC.

To be fair the big score was a totally tweaked out windows and an overclocked processor on my gaming profile. there are a lot of tweaks you can make to make games run faster. Update your mobo drivers, update your gfx card drivers, use a gfx card tweak program, create a gaming profile logon. All add frames to your score.

A gaming profile is when you create a hardware profile where only the things you need are active and every program except the one you are using is disabled.

This is one guide that i followed initially, but there are several good ones out there

For ref the following is the last profile i submitted, before i increased the FSB on my processor and added 512 ram. its just over 11000 using a mere 64mb, AGPx4 ti4200 thats had the s*** overclocked out of it using powerstrip.

As you can see, theres more to getting good frame rates than throwing a good gfx card at it.

Cheers all. I`ve resisted upgrading my gfx card as I knew if would be a can of worms, but I caved in on an impulse yesterday. My m/b is ok I think - MSI KT4 Ultra, but my processor has a 133 FSB and my RAM is PC2100.

I`m not sure how much credence to put into 3DMark scores. I`ve updated all my drivers etc, and got another 10500 on 3DMark2001 - less than half the score some are getting with the same card (albeit with faster and more ram, bigger processor etc). However when I tried 3DMark2005 I got 2932 - in the review of the 6600GT (AGP) on Toms hardware they got 2964 with a much higher spec PC. Something not right here.

I`ve tried a few more games - Call of Duty looks fantastic at 1024x768 with everything switched on, and Halo runs very well (it was crap before). Only really Doom3 thats running badly. So I`m happy but Nicks got me thinking now, wonder what effect a processor and RAM upgrade will have...

You should really be using at least 3DMark 2003, not 2001, as that doesn`t use a number of important features of the 6x00 chipset which is a big reason to be buying it in the first place.

2005 is pretty damn slow even on my 6800 GT btw. :)

As for Doom 3, all the shadows are calculated in real time by your CPU, which means that is most likely going to be your bottleneck there.

Yeah. 2001 is a really good benchmark of raw grunt, but the 4200 wont really play ball on anything higher than that, which is why im upgrading. Its the problem with synthetic benchmarks. My 4200 in some tests is every bit as powerful as some of the bleeding edge ones.

But disregarding some graphical bells and whistles I can still play HL2 and D3 with fairly high settings and get really good framerates. I just cant get some of the more advanced effects.

One of my friends (a tech buyer for an IT comapny) has got a Radeon x800 PCI-E card. Its in a water cooled A64 system with 2gb of Corsair Ram and a 21inch tft monitor. You havent played HL2 until youve played it on that. Everything shines, gleams and ripples like something pixar would put out. But all the butthole plays is the original CS..........
