Any Dell desktop users offer an opinion

I`m considering one of Dells packages which look to be goood value but would just like a third party opinion on how easy they are to upgrade with anything but Dells parts.

Quite often a supplier who only operates by selling a product direct makes sure that you can only go back to them for any bits and extras . :/

I run three Dell OptiPlex GX110`s (great PC`s by the way if you want a cheap second hand one from Ebay or the like - i`m talking about the Tower case not the Small Form Factor desktop case). Anyway I had to use Dell RAM when I upgraded - luckily found it cheap enough (Ebay again).

Also, I was recently asked to add a second Hard Disk to a friends Dimension 2400, only to find that the case wouldn`t take one. There is simply nowhere to fit it, no spare drive bay. Resorted to a USB HDD caddy.

Hope this helps a little.

Sam.

Thanks. Sort of confirms my sneaking feeling that anything to good to be true usually is.
Good value for anyone who`s never going to open the case but not so good for an inveterate tinkerer.
Oh well, back to looking on Morgans site then.

I`ve got a Dell 8300 Dimension and most of the components are standard parts, Western Digital H/D, Samsung Memory Which u can Order from Crucial and is on there site, Radeon AGP G/F card Creative sound card, if your buying a basic model it might not have slots for upgrades say sound card or G/F card but the higer models should be able to accommodate this

We have a few Dimension 4600s at work and have upgrade hard drives & memory using standard bits and bobs. Various HDs bought from places like Ebuyer, and memory bought from Crucial.
