Page 1 of Which `ping` is best? Higher or lower?

I play a bit of online gaming, but the whole thing with the "ping" is confusing... is it better for the `room` I am joining to have a high ping (ie. 384) or a low ping (ie. 73)? I don`t want to ask online and then be referred to as a `n00b` you see. :D

Lower is better.
It`s the time it takes to send and receive data. Less time equals less lag.. :-)

Ok, thanks. Its just I was in some low pings room last night and getting lots of lag for some reason. That`s just why I asked. Thanks! :D

Its probably just a ropey server. If the better players have high pings you can be sure its the server as good gamers usually have good connections.

Lo ping - as stated!

On a broadband connection I always try to avoid any servers with a ping over 100.

I would never join one with a ping of over 300 - it`ll lag too much. I`d consider around 200 a decent ping on 56k - so it`s a no no on broadband!

how do you send a ping to find out what yours is?.

i just had my first experience at lan play :D and oddly enough my ping rate is the same as your`s is this an average for a 1meg connection, i didn`t seem to experience any "lag" it was just like playing against bots (set at rock hard :/ ) the game i was playing was elite forces and at first i got totaly battered :o but the last game i joined was very good (30 mins) as there were about 5/6 other players so i didn`t get singled out as much :D anyone recomend a few good games ? not to bothered about covert/army games (yet) more into quake type games for deathmatch :) cheer`s
